Can anyone recommend a good breathing supplement?

Ted has COPD and has always produced quite a lot of mucus and can get a tight chest, with occassional coughing. They are currently harvesting and this is not helping matters. He has haylage or soaked hay, and is on shavings and is out during the night as there are too many flies during the day and he gets very stressed by them, so I cant turn him out 24/7.

I am thinking of putting him onto a supplement, but there are so many to choose from. Any recommendations?

NAF respirator is excellent. pollen x by global herbs is also a good one. also carl hester nasal vapour that you apply just inside nostril ( its like vicks vapour rub for horses!). rough time of year for them at the mo if they have copd isn't it, almost wishing for the cooler weather.

Look up Kenalog, it is a steroid used for other conditions but has been found to help COPD in some cases.

Just don't expect an instant result - some of the herbal supplements take 6 weeks to start working by which time the allergen might have gone!

Putting some vaseline on insides of nostrils is really good. A lot of the pollen sticks to it rather than going into the lungs. Just wipe it out every day and apply more. Riaflex-equine also do a good breathing supplement and I am pretty sure it is on offer at the moment, but generally these things take a few weeks to work.

Thanks for the advice and recommendations. He isn't on any meds at the moment, but has been on ventipulmin in the past, which made a little difference.

Forgot to mention that he is a fussy feeder. I tried him on D&H breathe free and he would not eat it at all, so don't know if it would have worked, as he turned his nose up at it and refused to eat at all. It did smell rather strong though.

Vet hasn't suggested an inhaler, but I am aware of them as used them when I worked as a groom years ago 3, but the huge horse that I administered it to hated it and used to be a nightmare. He went onto prednisolone tablets in the end.
However, its probably worth a try, as Ted's only 15hh, and I can get wormer into him without too many problems.

I have not been able to ride my mare through the summer for a good few years due to her breathing despite soaking her hay, shavings etc. I used to use the naf suppliment and it helped but this year I've used winergy ventilate and she's been normal, no discharge, wheeze, nothing, its expensive but for my mare its worth it
