In here because I'll get more specific answers I think!!

Whenever I get jods or breeches they always end up being that horrible cotton/lycra mix that goes saggy and bobbly after a couple of washes, and fades, and always looks dull.....not sure how to describe the material other than that....but it stains badly and absorbs water really easily!

I'm looking for 'nice' material jods, that are a bit more water repellant, less likely to fade and go saggy, and not go bobbly....but what sort of mix am I looking for?

tbh i think it's the manufacturers as much as the actual fabrics, if you see what i mean.
i have loads of pairs of Pikeur and Cavallo breeches, of varying materials (summer weight, winter weight thermal, in-between, plus comp breeches of diff materials depending on the weather) and they are all really good fabric that washes brilliantly, repeatedly. some of the comp ones are still going strong after 15 or more seasons. the ones i wear at home usually last about 10 years or so before they go through on the knees.
they cost me about £140 a pair, but over that many years, that ends up really cheap, whereas the few times i've bought cheap makes for £40 or so, they haven't lasted more than 1 season...
as for water-repellent, the only ones i've ever had that are reasonably water repellent are the Pikeur Lugana soft shell, which are
49% polyester, 30% polyamide, 12% polyu(rethane?), 9% elastane. i've got them on now so just checked! they don't stretch as much as normal Pikeur fabrics so you usually need to go up a size. they're fleecy lined, pretty much windproof, very toasty for winter.
i can check the other fabrics later if you like, if you say which season you want them for.
how's the knee btw, dare i ask?

I agree, my pikeurs are still going strong after 5 years, they are lightweights, no label for material sorry; my Toggi, cotton/bamboo? yes seriously, /spandex are great, and doing fine but are pretty new still. But my favourites are Horkas, 76% polyamide, 22% cotton, rest elastine must be 8 years old and I try not to ever take them off!!!! Mine are all lightweights. I confess any other brands, cheaper 40 to 60 normal price, have never lasted very long.

I have the most lovley pair of Pikeur breeches, they were given to me by a house sitting client (well actually they were in a bag full of stuff she gave me to take to my charity shop, and I intercepted them!!)
They are the nicest material I have ever had in breeches like a thickish cotton, and i cannot for the life of me replicate them I have even took them to saddlery and they dont sell this certain type of material, only like thin shiney stuff that shows knicker line and cellulite (not an attractive conbination!!) on the label its says 95% Baumwolle/cotton 5% Elasthan the knee patches are made of same fabric which I especially like, they have a very high shaped waist band with a V at the back and belt loops in 3's if that makes sense. If anyone can track these down and find me a pair I will bake you a cake, they are most definitly Pikuer they have the little fob on them.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful....I think I'm going for the wrong brands, I tend to go for unbranded!!!

The knee.....is still attached. I'm still lame. Still on box rest. Still going out of my mind with boredom/frustration!!

big vibes for your knee, hope you get some results with it soon before you start climbing the walls...
steeleydan, can you tell me what model they are? at very top of white tab (the one with all the writing on) usually, where it's stitched on. if so i can try to track them down...

I have an ancient pair of Mountain horse Maddona which I love. Used mostly as comp' breeches/exams/posh lessons. Have never managed to track another pair down but they are 76%polyester, 16%nylon, 8% spandex. Thin and flexible but don't show skin!
I wear my breeches 12 hrs a day, more in summer, and really struggle to find a pair which stay nice for more than a couple of months. Spent £160 on two new pairs of Musto snugs in October and both had holes under seat bones by Xmas- emailed Musto, saying that as a repeat customer I was surprised and disappointed etc , apparently its wear and tear. Humph!
Then spent £50 at Xmas on two pairs of Derby House Vancouver Breeches (BOYGOF) and both pairs now very bobbly/stringy where jacket must rub above bum. Pair of £70 George Shummacher breeches lasted 3 months before full seat seams split (and they were actually a bit baggy over the bum, could understand if tight!)

So good luck!
