Ok, I am looking to buy a trailer (second hand, limited budget).

I have seen a couple of ones which look fairly good (all old style ifor or rice etc), but they all seem to have straps at the back instead of solid breeching bars. Also - no way to change to solid breeching bars.

How many of you have breeching straps? How well do they work for horses who like to put their weight against them? my horse, when travelled in a trailer with a solid bar, is very much a tail rubber! So i am thinking i may have to limit my search to trailers with a solid back bar only.

opinions appreciated!

My girl leans used to lean like there was no tomorrow (before we turned her sideways!)

before the turn we didnt have much of a problem - A good tail bandage and a rug or tail protector was fine.
With the solid bars she actually freaked out because she couldnt lean!!!

I would ask around to see if you can try a trailer for a run to see what happens.

My friend with a 'rubber' swears by the 'Gel' Tail bandages to keep in place and protect her beautiful full tail.

They just dont look that strong! the straps that go across, i guess they must be ok to use if so many trailers have them. It's just not something I have come across in any trailers I have used before.

I'm looking at the same sort of thing. Just as a rough guide the straps are similar to those used for off road tow ropes so unless your horse is as heavy as a big 4x4 I wouldnt worry about the strap it would be the fitting to the trailer that is the weak part.

I am sure that there must be a method of installing breeching bars quite easily really. I can't imagine that it would be impossible to do at all.

Mine slot in and a pin just slides down to fix them at either end. Most of the time I don't use them at all anyway.

I certainly wouldn't restrict a search for trailers based solely on whether it has breeching straps or bars.
