So, we live in the big smoke but may be moving from our apartment to a house soon (the abode in question is large, with a roof deck and a 60' garden).

This house is within ten minutes of two parks, one 40 acres and the other 600 acres. I currently own a Boston Terrier and am dabbling with the idea of getting a second dog. It has to be small/medium, and a rescue wouldn't be out of the question. And I do love Boston Terriers

But if I were to opt for another breed, what suggestions does everybody have? We're big runners and like taking our dog for long walks, too.

You sound like the perfect owners for a rescue dog - Maybe pay a visit to www.batterseadogshome.co.uk . They have some LOVELY looking ones on there.
Best of luck, keep us updated on your search.

But I know several people who'd had dogs from the CACC, which, sadly, euthanises in a very short space of time. They do have a large number of Pit/Akita/Rottie mixes, though, so I guess I'll just have to keep my eagle-eye out for something more on the novice owner end of things.

Thanks for the suggestion!

A little whippet, they are loving loyal, but LAZY AND ENERGETIC all rolled into one, i have 3 my OH takes them running then they snoooooze the rest of the day away.

Yes, they are gorgeous, but not sure how they'd do in the city, even with a large park at my disposal. My friend has a pointer/beagle mix and he's always on the move, bless him.

I love the look of Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retrievers and Salukis, but I presume, being working dogs, they need acres to wander about on the whole time...

my advice would be not to go for a large breed bred to work but look at the companion breeds ... some suggestions might be :

French Bulldog
Mini Schnauzer
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Tibetan spaniel
Tibetan Terrier
Shetland sheepdog
German Spitz
Japanese Spitz
Scottish terrier
Sealyham
Norwich or Norfolk Terrier
Border Terrier
Cocker Spaniel
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen
all varieties of Dachshund
Toy and Miniature Poodles

happy hunting !

[/ QUOTE ] I agree - they are fabulous dogs but most seem to need really active or working homes. The ones I have known have all been lovely, but not the easiest pets - in fact one ended up being rehomed

going with the whippet people!

They will sleep all day (preferably in your bed) then race around like lunatics for about 15 mins on a walk.. then rush back home for some more important whippet snoozing time.

They hate the cold mind, so you would have to wrap them up well in some of your shocking NY winters! My older girl wears a wool jumper with a Whitney blanket over the top when it gets below freezing here and she still shivers miserably and whines if she is locked out of the tack room whilst we're at work.

We have a Welsh Springer Spaniel. They are calmer than an ESS and a bit stockier. The breed, does not seem to have suffered the over-breeding problems of the ESS either. Lovely natures, lots of energy, but small enough and sensible enought to be house dogs. Limited shedding. Very friendly with other dogs and people/children, so fine in a public park. Respond well to training. Can be difficult to get hold of, but plenty of webistes and a breed society which can help.
