Checked my little arab last night and she had large fluid filled lumps above BOTH stifles. I'm used to seeing filled legs and lumps on belly in pregnant mares but at first glance I thought she had been kicked, these lumps are on both legs above the stifle and about 10" across in size. Not sore or solid and it is not normal at all for this mare. It doesn't help that I don't know her breeding history, she is very large and we estimate that she is about 9 months in foal. There are no signs of bagging up or loosening up and she is eating well and pretty laid back, lives out 24/7 as she hates being in and I reckon it's better for her to be moving about. We've had a real drop in temp over the last few days to about -10C in the day at the highest, but she's used to that so I can't see that that could be a cause.
Really, what I'd like to hear is a chorus of people saying "Yes, I've seen that there before, all very normal" but other opinions and experiences are, as ever, most welcome and appreciated. Thankyou. Photo was taken a few days ago and she is normal in that but the swelling covers the whole darker patch on her stifle. Can't check yet as it's pitch dark outside still.

Thank you Mairi.
This is what the swelling looks like, I took this yesterday morning and they had got smaller, although still on both sides.

Enfys, could she have slipped on the ice? This looks like ligament damage from a fall, particularly as she has it on both sides. I'd personally call the vet.

Thankyou everyone.

Hmmmmmmmm. I've just been out to water the horses and checked on Lola's bumpy bits and now they have vanished! No puffiness, no tightness, no heat, pain nada! She's bucking and boinging about like a 2 year old, sound as a pound. Horses! I'll be keeping an even closer eye on her though.
