Can someone explain in very idiot proof words what a 'Inbreeding Coefficient' percentage of 19.4% is? I tried to make sense of the KC website but couldn't :( I feel very stupid!!

It's a close linebreeding or inbreeding, I *think* it would be a breeding between two animals with the same grandsire/granddam or both or a dog back to it's grandsire/granddam, I think the higher the percentage, the closer the relationship.

But I might be wrong :o

We do it like...the first number is the dog in common in the father's half of the pedigree, then the second number is the same dog in the mother's half.
So Jessie is linebred on Fido (3:5)
Fido is in the third generation on the father's side of Jessie's pedigree and the fifth generation on the mother's side - simpler for little old me to understand :o

That makes sense.

I'm just doing a bit of research. Think I've made my mind up to spay (she's due in season this month) but just playing at hypothetical boyfriend shopping. Will totally avoid lines with Grandsire in :)

Good luck trying to make sense of the KC website.
As you have just demonstrated it is pointless using inbreeding coefficients if you don't know how they work or what they mean (& they are not accurate as the KC counts imports as unknown so skews the result).

The same, excellent, healthy dog on both sides is not a problem and I'd rather have half brother x half sister mating from outstanding, correct, fully tested stock than a zero inbreeding match where the animals were less good.

EAST KENT's comment reflects this -the grandad may be the best dog in the pedigree and have lines you should look for rather than avoid.
(BUT the dogs that sire most puppies are sometimes among the worst around as they are available to anything - quantity rather than quality).

You need to speak to your bitches breeder or the breed club but you should not mate a bitch this month - add up the dates.
Most breeders plan matings months, or often years, in advance.

The kc inbreeding coefficients are very confusing, I had a play with Evie and the dog I am considering using and was puzzled by the results as it seemed to show far more inbreeding than I had calculated, hadn't realised that they didn't count imports, makes far more sense now.
With a breed with a limited gene pool due to smaller numbers you will often find more inbreeding because there is not so much choice. Pickle (the new heeler) is far more inbred than I would consider in a GSD. Agree its good advice to talk to Quila's breeder, and also ditto re mating now, Christmas puppies are never good, the only time I did it I ended up keeping them all till mid January rather than have them go to their new homes at the Christmas period.

The KC programme is not an accurate COI evaluation tool as to be of optimum use the COI should be worked out on a minimum of 5 gen ped, or better still a 10 gen. And as someone has pointed out the KC Mate Select does not take into account imports. If you have a 5 or 10 gen ped of the dog and bitch you can use a programme such as Compuped. There are several programmes either to buy or free download and I have used one but need to look at which one it is and I'll post the link to it.

As I said...not actually looking at breeding now, or at all, just playing at what if's. I'm just interested in the theory.

Her grandsire was a popular dog as he was a very good dog, he's Jack's great grandsire. Corgi's are a small group so would be hard to avoid him.
