It means instead of using a dummy for the stallion to jump on to collect they use a live mare that has had her ovaries removed and is injected with a drug to make her think she is in season.
She actually isnt just thinks she is and stands for the stallion to jump on.

I have to admit it is something i dont like the idea of as it isnt difficult to get them to jump on a dummy.
Well non of ours ever have been.

At Quainton they put the mare in a stable in front of the dummy as they do at Twemlows as this encourages the stallion to jump.
They tried her in the stable when they first collected from Derek even thought I had said he didn't need a mare around. I think they collected at 100 miles an hour. They now don't bother with the mare

Only reluctant stallions need to use the actual mare or those learning.

We use a dummy and the stallion usually sees a mare and then just jumps the dummy.
The teaser mares that are ovarectomised are used as jump mares otherwise whats the point of ovarectomising it.
Mine dont even need a mare in season.
These mares are given a hormone jab that makes them think they are in season so they will stand for the stallion and are then jumped so collection can take place.
It is fairly common practice and takes away the problem of not having a mare in season when required if you have no dummy.
Pretty sure twemlows have one as well and think they are still pretty common.
Im just a bit daft and it doesnt sit very well with me.
We first saw one about 15 years ago when we wnt to collect semen for a stallion up North the poor mare was covered from head to tail in carpet to stop the stallion biting her.
Not nice

I have to agree with you Sally, I would not have one either. My boys do the same as yours, see a mare then go to the dummy. When my mares are in season we collect their urine in a bucket so if I haven't got a mare in season and need to send semen out then a quick sniff of the urine is sufficient!

hmmm not a fan either, hav worked on a stud where some mares who are in season have been twitched up very hard and had four or five stallions on her in a day to collect off of but at least it stops soon as the mare comes out of season, but mares that are overiectisimised must hav a terrible time being jumoed its must be so painful for them as the backs must constantly ache
