I am thinking of putting my mare in foal next year. She's a 14.2hh lightweight very well bred Welsh D.I would like to put her to a lightweight 16hh ish TB or Anglo Arab as ideally i'd like to produce a 15.2/3 lightweight.I might be asking silly ?'s so apologise in advance! I also have in the back of my mind the idea of putting her to a connemara type (over 15hh) but have been told it would be hard to find a stallion with the height and also the foal would be worth more if it was out of a TB as it would be perfect for eventing.I'm finding it hard to find a lightweight stallion under 16hh.Have looked on a lot of directories but they are all huge-16.2hh +.
The main thing the stallion would have to have is a quality canter as thats about the only thing that lets my mare down. Her temp is second to none, good confo etc.
Any tips/things to look out for when choosing a stallion? She will be A.I'd at home.I've decided she'd go to stud to have it etc.Don't worry have added all the basic costs up- stud fee, boarding fees etc-worked at a TB Stud farm for a year and half so have had hands on experience etc.The foal would be mine to keep not to sell on so want to try and get it right as much as i can, although nothings easy and simple with breeding. A few pics of my mare:

Any help and ideas appreciated.

My horse that was killed was by It's without doubt and he certainly would have made a cracking eventer. He completed a 2day unaffiliated just before he was killed and was 8th as a 5 yr old. He just pinged round XC and sometimes bounced one stride doubles showjumping - that was spectacular to watch (I left the jumping bit to someone else !!)

We have a cracking little stallion that is dressage/eventing breeding and is graded with the SHB.(MFSS Raubritter)

He is winning Elementary dressage and did his first BSJA on monday getting a dc in the bn and a clear and 4 in the disc. he is 5.

He is on my website ( www.motefarmstud.com)

I also like bens affaire, but I have heard that the ben fairie lines can often be quite big!

If you want a nice canter (light to ride) have you considered an arab as these cross well with welshies and Welsh X arab are sooooo comfy and versitile!!
Will also be hardy.

I had a welsh x arab for years until 2005,she was cracking, would jump anything out hunting, was very comfy and easy to do in every way... gosh now you've got me thinking.Umm will search for some arab stallions too.
airedale-so sorry about your boy he sounded stunning.
bbmat-your stallions are gorge, have put your website in my favourites as your 16hh stallion is def a contender.
My stud fee buget is £750 max.
What does everyone think to a anglo arab cross welsh? Have heard not so good things recently about anglo arabs, havn't really known any myself but have heard they can be hot to handle as you'd expect really! but with my mares temp and calmness i'm not really worried, well i actually prefer hot spirited ones!
I do really like It's without a doubt but do you think he's too big for my mare? If i'm looking to hopefully get a 15.2/3 in the end do you think it'd turn out bigger.
Also odd ? but if she was put to a grey would it be likely that the foal too would be grey or is it pot luck?! Gosh that sounds bad as i should know all these colour genetics as i did it for my National Diploma! oops.

If you are breeding from her for the first and only time why not go for AI, there by reducing the stress for her and also increasing the options open to you. New Hill Farm stud in Manchester has a beautiful TB stallion, called Shackle. We were looking at using him on my mum's mare. He is really well put together and not to huge. I would definitely go for a TB or Anglo Arab stallion.

Sorry am readingwith only one eye! The website is www.newhillfarmstud.co.uk Shackle is 3 year old and only 16hh, we were going to use him on my mums tb mare but have decided to go for an ID instead, but I am definitely considering him for my mare next year. By the way the stud is lovely, we went there for Touchy's grading. And the people are really helpful and knowledgable.

Not a huge arab fan and i think you would get a much better cross if you went for a TB. There are so many good stallions about its really hard to chose.

hard to tell.what are her weakness you need to improve conformation wise?a side on pic would be helpful
if the foal is for you would you want an all rounder?eventer?personally i wouldnt send her to anything more than a hand taller espfor a first foal.does she have any breeding history?

Just seen this - if you're considering an Arab, here's a super one; he's 15.1 - but only 3 and it's his first season at stud. International champion, though. But then again you might be better off with a TB... Dunno - anyway here's some pics of H Tobago:
