Am I right in thinking that a shared sire make them half but the same dam is just known as 'out of the same mare'

Am I just going mad?? LOL

Thanks

lol - no, t'other way around! Families run on the tail side of the pedigree - the female family. Therefore all the 1/2 brothers/sisters and other family type relations will be from the females in the female side of the family. But 2 horses can be "by the same sire". This is more predominant in the racing industry, but ideally is correct for all horses, though little used....

Generally the other way around. For foals to be classed as half-siblings they have to have the same mother.

I think it's because a stallion can cover a lot of mares in a season where as a mare can only have one baby (excluding twins!), so two foals can be very diffrent depending on the mare.

*sorry, was much clearer in my head!
