Hi,

We have a 14.2hh Welsh Sec D Mare that we were thinking about trying to breed from next year. She has had a foal before when she was younger, but next year she will be 18 (she is very fit and well, doesnt look her age at all). Do you think that this is too old??

Providing that she could have a foal without too much risk, what would be the maximum sized stallion that we could put her to?

Here is a pic of her (this is last winter, she is in full winter coat and looking rather scruffy, she looks much better now!)

Thanks very much!

18 isn't too old but her fertility may be reduced. I currently have a 20 year old visiting mare at my stud. She has never had a foal before.
The size of stallion doesn't play a big part as the foal will only grow to a size the mare can cope with.
Good luck
