Breeding with no mare?

How do you go about breeding if you have no broodmare? I know of a lady who once loaned a couple of mares to breed from, then the mares went back once the foals were weaned. Is that a common occurrence? Or do some studs let you AI their mares, where the mare and foal live at the stud until weaning? I ideally don’t want to buy a mare to produce a foal.

If you have a particular stallion in mind, it would be more cost effective to identify a foal on the ground where you also like the mare. That way, you know the foal is a healthy prospect for what you want. But, in principle, yes many people do loan out broodmares, but they maybe are not always the quality you'd expect!

Ahh fab thanks. And how would I go about finding foals from specific stallions? I don’t suppose there’s a database of mares they’ve been put to (this is probably wishful thinking!)?

Yes those studs advertise and list what mares are available and their breeding etc

Plenty of studs either loan or lease broodmares. Anyone reputable with a decent mare would likely be wary of sending away to an unknown/novice breeder so may request the mare stays with them

The stud where I got my 2 boys from lets you lease a mare. The mares are mostly well bred warmbloods, it's a smaller operation and doesn't advertise. PM if you want the details.

Ask the stallion owner.

If you are interested in a foal by a particular stallion it is worth contacting the stud that stands him to see if they know if anyone is looking to sell their foal.
