My sis in law has a springer bitch. Said bitch can only (my estimates) be 14 or so months old. I know she has had 1 season, but sis in law is adamant she will be bred to on her second season which, according to her is due just this side of Christmas. I'm no expert, but to me it seems too young.

Anyway, that is one issue, the other is the stud dog (whom we are both good friends with his owner). He himself has all the right papers, the right sort for the bitch but is also a maiden stud. Somewhere I read (and then assumed) that having two maidens together is never the ''best'' situation to be in. Am I right in assuming this?

I don't like to see females being bred under two years old. Plus as you say, neither of them might have a clue what they are doing. And yes, for a maiden it is better to have a proven stud.

Have they been health tested for possible genetic issues? And I don't mean a 'vet check'.
Are either of them proven at anything, work, show etc? Or are they just being bred together because they are 'nice' - sorry, probably shouldn't even get started on that one :o hope it all works out.

Both FROM proven lines, dog currently doing trials. Bitch is really a pet. Dog has had tests (for what I'm not sure!) tbh doubt the bitch has.
I want it to work out, but this is sis inlaws first dog, and I worry she hasn't a clue what breeding from a bitch can do to her purse! among other things)

Both need eyes and hips cleared, and before any puppies are born a vet lined up to dock and dew claw..no working homes would touch them without that being done.Personally I would wait till her third season.

I know its only delaying the inevetiable but tell her the danger with breeding a very young bitch is she is likely to reject her pups plus the fact she is physically immature and may well need a C section and she could still reject her pups. Hopefully the thought of hand rearing these pups and the added expense of a C section might make her have second thoughts.

personally speaking I would advise strongly against it. I have bred a couple of litters in 20 yrs of dog showing, its very hard work and very stressful(well it was for me).

I have just made up a show champion and wouldn't let him within 100 yards of a un tested bitch!.
He has all the relevant tests for my breed , hips , elbows, eyes, and TNS screening(for our breed)and I would only allow him to be used on a bitch I approved of.
This isnt being fussy but caring about the breed and my dogs.
Its very stressful, expensive and not something to be done lightly.
Will your sis in law take a pup back should the owners circumstances change? or will it just join the thousands of other un wanted dogs.
I took a dog back when it was almost 2 as the owners moved abroad, I felt I brought it into the world so it was the least I could do.
Please please ask her to thing about this very seriously

Thanks CC! but feel really strongly about it. Too many unwanted dogs .)

Was trying to think but I am sure my last litter cost me over £1500, that was stud dog fees, worming , kc reg, feeding and eye cert at 6wks old and that was a healthy litter!. Not including the sleepless nights listening in case the bitch lay on any of the pups!.

I certainly didnt make any money as only had 3 pups and I kept one which is my boy just made to Sh Ch!
Sorry don't mean to lecture but its not something to go into lightly and need to have a open purse!.
