I've read that Brewers yeast can help with sweet itch, so wondered if it would be worth trying on my 4yr old, who has chronic urticaria to midge bites.

So - can anyone tell me where to get it, how much to feed, and whether horses find it palatable (my 4yr old won't eat stuff she doesn't like).

Thanks

linseed is also very good for itchy skin - i get both brewers yeast and instant linseed from Simple Systems.
i contacted Simple Systems for recommended dosage - will go find the email they sent me and get back to you

I buy brewers yeast from the local health food shop. They sell me 5 kilos for about £15.00. Last for ages, and feed about a tablespoon, or one of those measures you get in supplements, a day.

I would say that it helps the sweet itch symptoms, but you still need to rug, spray etc. I also never feed garlic to the one who has mild sweet itch

The 'Total Eclipse' stuff looks interesting, but I tried to feed her seaweed a while ago - she said 'no'.
Buddly - thanks for the PM, I'm off to Google.
F_S_ - If she'll eat brewers yeast, I'll maybe look into the cheaper sources. I never feed garlic as I am allergic to it. (

I get Brewers Yeast from Equus Health at the local tack shop. It helps with my itchy pony, I can tell the difference when I run out! I have 3 on it and all eat it fine.

Charnwood Milling do Brewer's Yeast in 25kg sacks, if you find you do want to feed it long term that may be the cheapest place to get it. Recommended dose is 50g a day (a VERY big tablespoon) but that's to use as a general vitamin and mineral supplement instead of other supplements.

My horses find it very palatable but it's a very fine dust and you probably need to damp the feed if you don't already feed sugar beet.

My horse ate it no prob and he knows when theres something different in his feed ie drugs. I found he went a bit sharp (already a spooky boy) so stopped feeding it and he went back to normal.

I use the Westgate Gold label one, about £9 for 1.5kg. As long as you give it slowly, just a sprinkle the first couple of days increasing slowly to the full daily dose in about a fortnight, you shouldn't have a problem with it being eaten at all. I've found it's better to mix it into an already damp feed rather than a dry one as it's so fine, it just filters down to the bottom of the bucket even if you damp it afterwards!

you have to introduce it slowly - just a sprinkle at a time to start off with building it up over a week to 10 days. but I have about 15 on it and no problems at all with them eating it. and I can assure you some are really fussy feeders. As with everything - if there is nothing else - they will eat it eventually. it is a fantastic feed balancer - has in it copper, zinc, magnesium as well as many b vitamins and calcium. it is actually a feed balancer in it's own right.

Now as you know, I like to experiement and test....

This is the best combination for my itchy two, based on last three years.

Year 1 BY and linseed - great coats and less itching.

Year 2 - BY and linseed and Skratch.

Year 3 - BY, linseed and clivers.

Brewers yeast, linseed and clivers, best results - and the midges were the same as previous years. I did add the Snuggy bodies in July but they were less itchy before these were put on.

Mine get a heaped tablespoon twice a day of BY, a small coffee mug twice a day of instant linseed and 1 heaped scoop of the clivers from Feedmark. As you know, they are rather substantial types.

You can get BY and linseed from Feedmark or Simple Systems. Clivers are from Feedmark. However, I get these from Charnwood Milling in 25 k sacks as I get through a fair amount - 1 sack of BY does my two from start March to end October and I used 2 sack of linseed as Stinky gets a bit more when showing. Charnwood are far cheaper than the other two suppliers.

I also tried Skratch from Global Herbs. Result was less itching but they stank of cat pee. I find the clivers added to the BY and linseed had better results and far cheaper.

Hope you enjoyed the essay

If you want, I can send you a small sample of all three for her to try, just PM the Hades address if you want some.
