I've helped out and worked in some great yards. Over the years, I've collected lots of ideas for what I would do if I ever had my own yard — and now I have, we've made it compact and user-friendly.
Feed

The Simple Systems range works well for my horses, including a 21-year-old in-foal broodmare, her two-year-old and an eight-year-old novice event horse. I feed a basis of lucerne, unmolassed beet and grass nuts — a natural diet that also provides enough fuel for my event horse.

He had a difficult start to his ridden career and the magnesium-based product Nupafeed has really helped to calm him down. He used to be excitable at competitions, but now takes everything in his stride.

All the horses get linseed and brewers yeast and, with the exception of my broodmare, seaweed. They go out every day and have salt licks in their stable

Here you go from Simple Systems:

Traditional Brewers' Yeast

The perfect natural source of a wide range of B vitamins, Brewers’ Yeast has long been a favourite of horse keepers. Helps to support horses with behavioural problems, prone to anxiety, mareishness and travel stress. Its high quality amino acids encourage a healthy population of gut flora, ensuring better hindgut digestion. Also provides copper and zinc. Particularly useful for hard working horses, lactating mares, anxious and problem horses.

Typical Analysis: Crude Protein 43%, Crude Fibre 3%, Ash 8%.

I've used a few calmers and thought top spec was good, however I've also heard about brewers yeast and epsom salts working well and are a lot cheaper! .

I don't think it works as a calmer - I feed two large scoops of it a day to the horse with sweet itch and its fab for that.

He has more energy than his full brother than is not on brewers yeast. On the other hand I am pumping both of them full of top spec turbo and red cell to make the pair of them 'less calm'!

epsom salts can act as a laxative so no recommended for routine use-try some mag ox if you want to try magnesium. brewer's yeast didnt clam mine but I use it as an anti-midge supplement. actually, I feed marmite now as he likes it so much

marmite??? hehehehehe Thought mine was crazy taking a fondness to my ham sarnies at events??? .Thanks 4 all your ideas.

I think it has something to do with the B Vitamins in it. I believe a lack of these might cause tension and stress reactions. Some horses lack magnesium, so mag based supplements work whereas others lack the B vitamins. I used to use a mag based supplement but have now gone to Brewers Yeast and my horse is now super laid back!
