One cannot help wondering what the good people of West Dorset think of their Member of Parliament, Sir Oliver Letwin, in the context of BREXIT, the recent events in the House of Commons and in particular what the grandees in Cattistock country are thinking. It's a an interesting collective compote, when considering the sleepy little villages surrounded by the great hunting estates, who have for the preceding 40 years enjoyed free handouts of farm subsidies from Brussels.

The sublime paradox, is the fact those who wish to remain in the EU and eschew BREXIT, are fundamentally the Labour party and such as the Liberal elite of Islington etc. I have tried to understand, indeed discover why the Labour party, who banned fox hunting are so eager to retain the free handouts of farm subsidies from the European Union, to the continuation of 'fox hunting' estates, farmers and certain packs of hounds, with sufficient land surrounding their kennels that merit the entitlements. Perhaps Corbyn and his rag, tag and bobtail cronies do not realise where the payments are made. That said, I bet Sir Oliver Letwin knows exactly where and to whom the farm subsidies are paid.

I am surprised but impressed that my true blue pro hunting Tory MP is a firm remainer. Except that she is now been booted off the Tory benches, is still in parliament but is now an Independent MP, and is being deselected by her former local Tory hunting/shooting/fishing cronies.

Go girl, Antoinette Sandbach. Thank goodness for independent thinkers rather than sheep.

Tiddlypom, I was wondering who would reply or post on this thread. It would be shame for yesterday's events in the House of Commons not to find their way onto this forum. That said, so far as the MP for West Dorset, Sir Oliver Letwin is concerned and in particular Cattistock hunt country, there is far more to his activities in parliament than meets the eye, coupled to the great estates of West Dorset.

Letwin is a trouble maker he is always stirring the pot .
Been at it for years .
This particular little bit of trouble seems to trace straight back to Gina Miller

Perhaps BJ/Dominic Cummings should have looked past the last crisis, when they withdrew the whip from stalwart Tory MPs, who then came back to bite them. Clever people rarely just lie down and let others walk all over them.

I would imagine to large landowners EU money is a drop in the ocean. They hide money off shore and then invest in untraceable money making schemes.
The truly rich will not be affected by Brexit, tenant farmers will, if in raised feed costs and lower market prices, the price of beef on the hoof is already down from last year.
So they will not get the subsidy, and the price of everything else will go up. The landowner will rent out land for maize, for anaerobic digesters, where there are still grants, therefore more land gets taken out of real food production.
They say follow the money, the trouble is we do not know where most of the money is, and who is paying who through shell companies.

The following from today's Daily Mail is worth a read if one has the time:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/...r-Letwins-clumsy-meddling-never-forgiven.html

My sources tell me, the whole Letwin (Lew-in for devotees of hunting) debacle, including the Letwin Cooper nonsense, has been hatched in West Dorset and promoted by the great estates that he represents. In actual fact, he has secured the Farm Subsidies from the EU for the various estates and farming institutions, for some considerable time, thereby causing tenants to have to pay sky high inflated rental values per acre (one does not recognise hectares).

Of course West Dorset rejoices in some remarkable place names such as Toller Porcorum, Tollar Fratrum, Ryme Intrinsica and Melbury Osmund to name but a few.

And every large estate has a manager to pour though government paperwork to work out where the money is going to come from, often not actually farming the land.
Owning land is a business, that’s why people still keep buying it. You want to make it pay, if you are making it pay by doing nothing you are going to do it.
I am sure James Dyson who owns vast amounts of land takes advice. He owns more land than the Queen, including large farms in Lincolnshire and claims EU subsidies. Being a businessman like moving production of his hoovers out of the UK, if he thinks food production is not making enough money he will be looking for the next money making opportunity for the land.

When they brought in SFP everyone with acreage whether they farmed or not tried to claim.

If one subscribes to your originating post concerning Gina Miller and then reads the following piece from today's Daily Telegraph,

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/10/20/oliver-letwin-cleverest-stupid-person-Westminster/
20 October 2019 • 7:25pm

"He has been described as the "cleverest stupid person in Westminster".
But yesterday it emerged that Sir Oliver Letwin, the former minister credited with the dubious honour of derailing Brexit at the 11th hour, is seemingly being controlled by a leading anti-Brexit barrister.
The brains behind Letwin’s “act of sabotage” is Lord Pannick, the crossbench peer who masterminded Boris Johnson’s Supreme Court humiliation.
“This isn't Letwin's amendment, it's Pannick's amendment,” one furious Tory insider frothed this weekend".

then your view holds water, because it appears Lord Pannick QC is behind the drafting of Letwin's amendment. Pannick of course is the barrister who acted for Gina Miller in The Supreme Court. However Letwin had to have a reasonable reason for his constituents, in order to participate in the enterprise. I say enterprise, because one wonders if what has happened and taking the legal, political and constituency trail to West Dorset, there may be a parliamentary enquiry, as to circumstances of Letwin's activities. Fundamentally, the plotting is disruptive to the government and nation as a whole and goes back to West Dorset. Especially as Letwin does not now appear to be a Conservative MP, I am not sure if he was fired by the party or he resigned. Nevertheless, I dare say the Conservative Party committee and Chairman for the constituency, will have a great deal to say, about how the good people of West Dorset, have been ambushed and hijacked for the benefit of the wealthy and dominant in society, especially in the agricultural industry.

DEFRA's new website now publishes all the names of every single Farmer, Landowner and Tenant, their locations and payment amounts of the benefits received for Farm Subsidies.

http://cap-payments.defra.gov.uk/Search.aspx

It never ceases to amaze one how the wealthiest in the land, receive handouts from the state for owning or tenanting farmland.

A good example is The Honourable Mrs Townsend who is a Joint Master of The Cattistock Hunt who collected a cool £55,970.01 for her inherited acres and rated as one of the wealthiest people in the United Kingdom.
