Hi everyone
I have a new baby :D, a gorgeous 4 years old Welsh D, took him out quite a few times the past weeks in a simple cavesson bridle and a snaffle, but he is very strong. I don't really want to start over complicating the poor boy but due to his greeness he is both very eager in the fields but nervous on the road and I don't want to feel as if I am having to yank to pull him up which is what I am having to do. I do understand that he does need educating but with the weather as it is riding him out in my only real option.
He was ridden in a grackle bridle when I went to try him out but was told it was only cause he didn't have his own bridle but I think that it's far too much for him. What would you suggest?

I would consider trying him in a pelham with double reins - it would allow you to mainly use the snaffle rein but if needed you would have the extra of the curb rein which gives you the control without having to yank. I was having a similar problem with my mare where I generally only needed a snaffle but on occasions was having to yank to pull her up, this was suggested. I was pretty reluctant but tried it and have found such a difference as most of the time I can just use the snaffle. I use an elastic curb tho, the chain curbs can be harsh.

Mynutmeg, thank you, someone else suggested it to me this afternoon and I too was quite skeptical but as my friend who suggested it has one I could try on him, I think I might see how we go.
