Vet said I should have a go at riding PF in a hackamore. There have been a couple of challenges; 1) Getting a bridle with short enough cheek pieces to put a hackamore on PF and 2) finding a way to keep the curb strap low enough to avoid her bump and nose piece high enough not to restrict her breathing...
So in the end, after MUCH faffing around with bailer twine, I vetwrapped the nose piece of the hackamore to a noseband and fitted the curb strap lower than usual (although in the pic it's a bit higher than I would like; I've dropped it a bit)
How does this look? Obviously it worked better once the reins were on!!

PF seemed happy enough in it. She fidgeted a bit, but then she's been off work for 2 months and it IS a totally new bitting experience for her. Obviously at the first sign of pain/discomfort, I'd take it off. I did notice that whilst the braking was fine (same as with the snaffle) the steering was pretty fuzzy. Is this to be expected with a hackamore? I've never ridden in one before, so I don't know what to expect.
Ideas/advice/suggestions welcome

Steering can be a little muted in a hackmore (esp if the horse isn't as used to decoding the pressure) but I would think vet wrapping it to the noseband have dulled it a bit more. If she goes well enough in it though and you can get her to bend wouldn't worry

Can you not get your hands on a bosal? They sit a bit lower so would avoid the bump. As regards steering, I have seen people do reining on them, and lots manage to negotiate a trail course.
Tho I know -without being rude - there is some really dreadful tack in south america and a bosal is only really any good if it is wide enough/ made from nice rawhide.

PF why do you need the noseband on aswell?, agree with bugs I think it will confuse the steering more.

I need the curb strap low to avoid the bump, but if the curb strap is low, then the nosepiece drops too low as well. I attached it to the noseband to keep it up whilst allowing the curb strap to stay low. I could raise the nosepiece by attaching it to the browband with some bailer twine but it looks horrible. Worth a try though?
