Hi there, I wanted to ask some advice as I'm in a bit of a predicament and not sure what to do.

I bought a lovely bridle recently from a reputable vendor. Infact he's a really nice guy and I was chuffed with the bridle when it arrived. UK made with English leather and quality fittings. It seemed and should have been the perfect bridle. It cost around about £90

Anyway I didn't even get it on the horse. I becam to clean it with stubbed saddle soap and j was going to dress it with flexalan. All was good until I got to the browband, the dye all came out, all over the sponge and my hands. I explained it to the guy who sold it me who said he didn't know why it had happened, it had never happened before.

Anyway I sent the bridle back and he checked it and basically said it must have been something I did! I only used Stubben soap and a Sainsbury's baby sponge.

So basically I font know what to do. I have effectively chucked away a lot of money. This guy is a well known, good guy and I don't want to go upsetting anyone or complaining however I don't see how it could have been my fault. Especially when the cheek pieces were ok.

What a nightmare :(

Oh no this was more than than, this was all the colour coming out to the point where you were at a totally different shade / texture underneath: I've had horses for most of my thirty years and never experienced anything quite like this, something went fatally wrong somewhere along the line, injust can't see how it could have been with me.

Unusual, perhaps a batch batch of leather, the dye is fixed whilst tanning and shouldn't come come at all (unless it's Indian leather which in your case is not) I'd be very interested to see some photos of it, close up too?
The leather dye (not the edge stain) is usually an aniline dye, which is spirit based, it is also not good to get on your skin.

Let me know how you get on?

The bridle has to be fit for purpose, and leaching the dye means it is not fit for purpose. A bridle is meant for use on a horse, in all weathers, which means it will get wet from sweat and rain, it should stand up to water to and cleaning with proprietary cleaning products, Stubben saddle soap is a perfectly normal product to use. I would tell him you want it replaced, if he says no, then remind him of your rights under the Sale of Goods Act, he HAS to replace it, or fix it.

Here's a picture of the browband, sorry it's so big. You can kind of see the dye on the white leather. What do you think the issue is?

I know, however this might vex him and that really isn't my intention. It isn't his fault I'm sure of that. The bridle was gorgeous and very well made.

It is unusual I must say, all I can think of is either the leather dye wasn't "fixed" properly at the time of manufacture (VERY unlikely as there are strict quality controls in place to stop bad batches getting through to the end use) OR the person who made the bridle may not have had enough of the right shade of leather (it happens!) so has resorted to dying some of their own, again it would need to be fixed to stop the dye leeching out, this is my best guess.
As others have said, first port of call is to go back to the supplier and see what they have to say. ALL leather will lose colour over time, just look at black saddle flaps where the colour has come out where the stirrup leathers go etc but this usually takes alot of wear before this happens.
Let me know how you get on and good luck, :)

well the actual price was £84.99. Either way I was so disappointed as the martingale leathers and reins were OK. I wouldn't know the difference between hand or machine stitching to be honest. Either way at the moment I have no bridle as I sent the strange faded one back and no money. I hate having to do horrible things like open paypal cases against people however I feel I have no other choice, I'd be a mug if I didn't. I've done nothing wrong (unless stubben saddle soap has some sort of nasty ingredient which I highly doubt) and I cannot afford to just lose that much money.
