Bridle size rant!

I think my horse has the strangest sized head ever! :p

I really want to get a new bridle with money I got at Christmas.. Plus I’m really fussy about what it looks like! We jump in a grackle and I have another bridle with a flash for flat.

They both have so many holes in! The grackle which is full size has extra (not very neat) holes punched into the cheek pieces and one to make the length of the noseband shorter.

And the cavasson which is cob sized has a hole on the very end of the noseband to make it bigger :/

I just want a nice neat bridle
L

He has a short wide head apparently and he’s only 14.3, and he has pony sized breastplate!

So just a bit of a rant really as I’ve just been looking online to find something that looks nice, is good quality and I can buy matching cheek pieces for. Ideally I want a new grackle and maybe just buy I nice cavasson to interchange it with though I am lazy and it would mean changing bits as well!

Anyone else have this? Or do I just have the oddest shaped horse ever :p

Bridle sizes are a nightmare. I ended up getting one made for my NF, she needed pony sized and cob sized parts. As I was showing her it was easier to make a made up bridle of bits and pieces into a saddler and get them to make one. It was relatively cheap (about £65) and lovely english leather with the buckles just where I wanted them.

Do you have a local saddle maker? You might be able to get one made :)
My cob has short cheek pieces, I went to my local tack dealer and was able to buy separate pieces

Yep feeling your pain OP.

My traddie cob is mid-size between a Full and a Cob size, I've lost count of how many headcollars and bridles have had to be returned because they're either way too big or way too small, never anything remotely the right size!

In the old days........ (hearing the groans here:)) one used to be able to buy all the "bits & bobs" separately, i.e. headpiece, cheekpieces & nosebands - all separate. I've still got bits from my old bridle of years ago.......... but then (sigh) leather was good English leather in those days and not cheapie rubbish from gawd-knows-where -and-don't-ask.

I have a rising 4yr old cob, was standing at 13 2hh in the summer, as he is ride n drive, I bought him a cob size harness, longreined him twice in the bridle, (we are just keeping him ticking over) then his head exploded and his bridle is too small, I just hope my other ride n drive's full size bridle will fit him, can't wait to see what size the baby ends up as

Ah thank you! Not just mine then! I'll have to call my saddler and see if there's anything she can do :) Never thought about that! I was looking at getting just new full size grackle noseband to put with my old cob bridle but I just can't find anything that matches! Though I'm sure the pony won't mind at all! :p

Bridle sizes of pony, cob, full are somewhat vague, as they are with human clothing, what fits me in large in one brand won't be the same size in the next brand.
I have at least 4 sets of measurements for pony, cob, full and hunter bridlework ALL different!
I'm making up a made to measure ex full bridle at the moment for a lady on here, her horse has parts that are a mix of near enough cob, full and ex full (hunter) size depending on what set of measurements I'm looking at at the time!
Wide chunky head but a short head, so parts are either too small or too long and on the top hole with off the peg bridles.

I would try your local saddler, I have had to do that as we have a Cob head piece pony cheeks and nose band and a full size brow band

I'm sure your local 'working' saddler would be willing to help and of course, there are still a few decent manufacturers around (us included of course!) that are more than happy to do bridles made up of different part sizes to give you the best fitting bridle. Our size chart is on our website & I'm sure other manufacturers' are too.

You need to measure all sections of your horses head...then go to a shop and buy each individual part that suits the measurement best! Best way to get a good look but well fitting bridle!
