It has probably been posted on here before but I can't make the 'search' function work on this new and improved horse and hound forum so I will post my questions here:

1. What should a bridleway width/surface be on approach to a wooden bridge over a stream?

2. What should the width/angle be around a 3ft bridleway gate when trying to open/close it on horseback.

3. What height is allowed/recommended for hedge/fencing on either side of the gate posts.

Many thanks for your help.

To my shame, though I was involved with bridleways for years, can't answer any of your questions. But if they are specific, not general, can I suggest contacting the PROW (Public Rights of Way) Department of whatever Council the bridge and bridleway gate are in. They are extremely helpful as a rule, and you may be able to get things adjusted. Our local PROW lady (who is exceptional!) has just had a lot of hedge cut back from a bridleway gate which was causing huge problems, as your horse had to bury his nose in said hedge for you to be able to open the darn gate. It's vastly improved. Try them.

The width will depend on the recorded width of the bridleway which you can determine from the difinitive map officer of your local County Council.

The bridleway gate should be wider than 3 feet for a horse. At least 6 feet wide.

There is no restriction on the height of a hedge adjoining a bridleway unless it is growing on it in which case it should be removed.

For bridleway gates look at www.centrewire.co.uk
