bridleways in the EU

Hi, does anyone know if there are any restrictions to riding in the EU? I know in the UK you are expected to ride only on bridleways or private land if given permission, but do the same rules apply elsewhere or can you roam about?!

I imagine it would depend on the country. In Scotland you can go where you want (some restrictions obviously) but in England (and Wales, not sure) you aren't allowed to.
