Cattarina Cook and her companion where featured on Radio 4 this morning (Tuesday) talking about their 400 mile ride to highlight the difficulties that horse riders have regarding off road riding. She explained how in the 1950's many bridleways where downgraded to public footpaths when they should have remained bridleways. She also stated that pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders where all vunerable on todays roads and needed off road riding. She also stated that all local communities should create circular routes so that children could ride their bicycles and ponies in safety.

Local BHS Bridleways groups can be brilliant - we have a great example in mid Sussex, they've worked wonders with the usual small number of devoted volunteers - cleared bridleways, created safe routes alongside blind corners on regularly ridden narrow lanes, nagged the CC to provide hunting gates on downland routes, and have the unbelievable patience to just keep on the case all the time on the bridleway/by-way/downgrades issues, year after year ... and that's what it seems to take with many county councils!

Regarding the downgrading from a Byeway to a Bridleway pleasse be carefull as if you do do that then you will prevent carradge drivers from using them as they are not allowed to use Bridleways. You are better off getting it changed from a Bridleway o a restricted byeway as carrage drivers can still use it. Also a Bridleway can be ploughed up but a Byeway can not be ploughed up.

For instance around my area of North Hertfordshire a group of BHD Volunteers have is association with the Access Department of Herts County Council cleared and re-surfaced almost the entire network of Public rights of Way in the last 15 years creating a complete network of off road riding for horse riders etc.

What we need is to increase the membership of the BHS nationwide as this will increase the revenue and enable the BHS volunteers to do even more for horse riders
