Well it was a Brilliant day mostly. As part of the master plan to keep 'Horse Too Big' happy and make him a better person I have been nabbing every opportunity for short hacks with sane individuals and today I decided was THE DAY for going solo.
Lesson 1 Mounting from a 5 bar gate. Took him out of the yard into the lane and held my breath as I cajoled and connived to get big bouncy beast parallel to gate as he gawped at traffic on Dual Carriage way hurtling past at faster than they should mph (dont worry dual-carriageway is parallel) taking care as pictures of the potential for disaster hurtled through my brain. He was a very good boy.
Lesson 2 went for hack down windey little lane past dragons, vicious were- Rabbits and worst of all gremlin filled fallen tree. Whipped round twice and both times only needed stiff brakes and managed a handbrake turn to get back in right direction. Finally arrived back at yard elated at having maintained control stayed on and not having wet my pants.
I was so happy. Popped Horse too big into arena for a roll before bedtime with pony best friend. He showed off and pranced around with his tail out. Mucked out went back and called to them and as I walked across to the now chilled beasts friends pony double barelled him.
He looked stunned and would you believe it - cut to foreleg and it was out of hours and I had to get a vet out and he now has 4 staples.
Its our first mishap of the vet kind and the little (16.3) treasure was as good as gold even when he had his injections. OH wasnt too pleased when I phoned a) waiting for vet b) turned up and told him that when I had cooked dinner I would leave it to keep warm while I went back and gave him his hay and his belated tea (he was sedated for staples).
But then horses do come before OH in pecking order dont they!!
