....you might already do this. But a friend took me to a show a year ago and i've been doing this since and makes life so much easier.

I might look like a fool, and you have all been doing it for years and i'm just slow to catch on  BUT.....

Having a already tied rope in the trailer, loading horse, clipping on tied rope and unclipping the rope you led them in with. Done...none of this horses head in face and being squashed while trying to get the tied up.

To unload unclip rope clip on loose rope and lead off.

My life is so much easier, i don't spend my time with face in the haynet and horse pulling my hair to get my hair tie.

Now you can all tell me that i'm the only one that didn't know this!!! :p

Same here, most recent lorry came with trailer ties already in place with panic clips one end and somewhat elasticated.

Well done for posting Bug2007......the more peeps that know the easier it is for us all...
Just a small add on, make sure you add a little WD40 or some such to the clip in the trailer/lorry as sometimes the atmosphere will make the clip stick a bit thorough lack of use.
Best wishes:)

Hopefully without sounding patronising, make sure the panic snap is nearest the horse, one of those heavy clips flipping around on the end of a loose horse can take an eye out if it hits :( Speaking from painful experience here one missed my eye, took out a tooth instead, which was better as I have more of those to spare.

Catch 22 really, which is least risky, trying to get near a thrashing horse, or get a metal clip across the face?

There should always be a light baler twine to break.

Not any more-the quick release bungees are safer and easier to use. I stopped using baler twine after seeing a horse get it stuck between his teeth. When I worked in Germany, we cross tied on the yard, using covered chains with quick release clips, which worked very well, so I still do that. I cross tie to travel too, using elastic bungee. Mine all used to ground tie as well - it's such a useful habit to get them into.

For some reason we habitually do this in the right hand side of the lorry but not the left, I have a feeling this is because we have a side ramp and the hanging rope might be a pain in the bum sometimes when putting it up. Either that or we're just thick and think you can only leave a rope on one side? *doh* ;)

We have ours on string in the lorry, but do have some quick release bungies on the yard, they're great, just a small piece of elastic threaded back on itself through a little plastic catch. They snap open quickly enough if needed but will take the initial attempt to pull away and usually that's all that's needed ;)

The 'quick release' lead rope clips though like a claw where you have to pull back the outside of the clip to pop open, I can't stand. I just don't and can't get on with them day to day. I can see that yes if your horse was trapped they'd open quicker, sometimes a rope is so tight you can't get the ring on the headcollar to line up with the gap in the catch to free the horse - BUT I have caught up horses very rarely, whereas have to let go of a nutter in a hurry more often and if I had to undo one of those leadrope clips I'd have been dragged halfway accross the field before I did it lol.

Just ensure that when you unclip your "normal" lead rope you remember to put it in the car/horsebox. Don't leave it at home like my sister did one time, and she hadn't packed her spare that day either, it would have been awkward if she'd had to unload in an emergency and not had time to put a bridle on!!!

Well I am an idiot too as I aways get head bashed with dripping hay wrapped around me too - shall now do what you suggest bug and avoid having to pick hay out of my hair all day!!
Thank you for a useful post, can't belive I have been struggling with tieing up like this for so long without working out that there could be a much easier way!!!

On the safety tie up thing - I always have thinned bailer twine off the metal ring and I tie the lead rope up to that. What safety ties do you use and how good do you find them, are the single use or can you put them back together again? Do you find that they actually realise when you want them too, not too easily or with too much force needed? (sorry to bulldoze your thread bug2007, hopefully this is related enough!)

I think I put this up without thinking, I have a headcoller/bridle and sometimes put a bit of twine on the headcollar end,, for emergency use only out hacking if I have to tie him up., but one thing I have noticed is that people are using the thick baler twine which will not break, I know it will not break because we had one horse injured when the tied up long [a criminal offence in my opinion] got its leg over the rope and .... well, off work for another six weeks, but handler still did not realise the problem was the thick twine, although she did eventually get the velcro release ties, which are adjustable for ponies to carthorses.

We use these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Equitie-Equ...sr_1_6?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1310114691&sr=1-6 and yes, you just rethread them. Like any stretchy thing they get a bit tired after too much use and abuse, but they're really easy to set up and also to release yourself so you can tie the horses up elsewhere on the yard where there is only string and not a quick release
