Had a first ride out today on one of our boys since he had time off following a pulled tendon in his off fore, I was wondering if anyone could suggest what kind of work to do with him and how to build it up? Don't have a school so mainly during hacking.

Also is there any point putting some kind of boot or bandages on him for support?

Thanks in advance:)

I found a good programme online when I was bringing mine back into work after a ddft. I'll see if I can find the link.

Basically though it's just slow and steady, avoiding heavy/uneven going and gradually building up; I didn't use boots as I feel they don't support the tendon and can do more harm than good because of overheating.

miles of pavement pounding first 4 weeks in walk, next 4 in walk and trot, next four in walk and trot with some canters on nice old turf!

Walk, walk and more walking!! Incredibly boring but the most fantastic groundwork for tendon/ligament recovery. Having said its boring though there is no reason that in that in the later stages that one could teach all manner of lateral movements, ie)shoulder In/half pass ect. :)

I was told not to race my horse again, after he broke down (not V badly - when coming 3rd in an Open, having won three novice riders Points that season) But I gave him 2 years off and then did masses of road work (3 weeks walking, steady trotting up hills 3-6 weeks) before steady cantering after 6 weeks interspersed with masses of road work in-between. About 2 years 6 months after his injury he was a very creditable 3rd in his first race back in Open Company. Sustained proper road work is the key I think......good luck with yours.
