Bringing a horse back into work after colic surgery

Next month my cob can come back into work after colic surgery, any advise?
Oh and he doesn't hack (well he does but horse & rider may not come back together and if both are still alive it was a success!)

I would discuss wih vet in the first instance. Has he been on total box rest or been turned out, on walker etc? How drastic was the surgery - resection etc?and how well did he recover, would all have a bearing on how long rehabilitation would take. Mine was on an walking exercise regime from just a day or two after surgery, very gradually building up to pretty strenuous lunging so he was very fit when I rode him for the first time after 4 months - all under veterinary guidance.
