Bringing a horse back into work and saddles...

I'd like to bring my mare back into work but i don't have a saddle. She's been off around 5 years. Should i get the saddler out to fit one without seeing her ridden and then come back when's she's doing a bit more to check the fit or would a little walk and trot in the school be ok so he can see it with a rider?

I think it depends on the horse - if you feel you can safely walk and do a little trot - I find half a 20m circle then down the long side on each rein can tell me a lot - then you'll get a much better fitting, though I do also fit unbacked youngsters.

Thanks. She's 20 so that's why I'm being cautious. She's sound and in good condition but I don't want to overdo anything.
