Hi everyone,

I am bringing my horse back into work and i have had a lot of comments along the lines of "are you not taking that too quickly"

Was just wondering how quickly you would bring a horse (that you had owned for 4 years and knew inside out) back into work that had just had 2 months off

thanks a lot

Two months isn't long to be out of work.

I am bringing a 10 month box rest injured horse back. Done 15 min walks in hand for 2 weeks, now into 10 minute rides every day building to 30 minutes over a 4 week period, all in walk, then re scan before trot starts.

If you are not nursing an injury you could do a weeks walking of around an hour and then just carry on as you would getting a horse fit.

Depends how fit the horse was before it had the time off and why it had had the time off. Has the horse had plenty of turnout while off work? All considered together would make a big difference as to how fast I brought my horse back into work.

ditto others - depends on how fit the horse was before the break, what sort of break the horse had and the age can play a part.
I would start of with walk work for a week or 2. Gradually adding trot work and continue with fittening.

Horse was reasonably fit before his time off. He had time off because he seemed sore, had lots of vets look at him and xrays, nothing wrong that the vets can see so i have to bring him back into work and see what happens basically.

He has just been turned out for 2 months (coming in at night)

Oh and he is 9

In that case I'd probably do a week of walk, mostly straight lines and hacking, nothing tighter than a 20m circle and then if still comfortable at that stage I'd introduce trot in week 2 but still straight lines. I'd want to spend a little bit of time at each stage so I could tell the vet what stage we'd been at if anything resurfaced.

Ok you have reassured me =) I have just been going on hacks and just started trotting him yesterday he seems really comfortable.

people seem shocked that i am riding for over 10 minutes i know my horse and if i dont step up the pace soon he will get bored and start playing up
