It has now been 4 weeks since the steriod injections in her hock. We have worked up to 20-30 mins of walking with some light inclines and she seems comfortable. I tried a little trot today for 10 mins and she was ok afterwards. I would just like to know the next steps for progressing further into canter work. I dont want to rush things. Thanks Peops xx

Personally when bringing horses back into work i will do at least 2 weeks in walk then another two weeks in walk and trot, slowly building the amount of trot up each day and the length of time until we were doing 40 mins in walk and trot easily. then i would start working in the canter building up over another week or 2.
This is just my personal method and I havent had experience with rehab after joint injections. My horse had a neasty kick to her hock so had been off for over 6 months and we used this timescale roughly.

I think the important thing is to listen a feel what your horse is telling you. I tend to feel when they are ready to move on to the next step.

Hope that helps a little

Ooh, hopefully my answer will be helpful.

My horse went to Rainbow equine as a referral and had hock injections. I was given a written fitness plan, it goes like this.

Week 1 & 2 - 20 mins walk.
Week 3 - 30 mins walk and 5 mins trot
Week 4 - 30 mins walk and 10 mins trot.

Basically, increase trot by 5 mins per week until you are on 30 mins walk and 30 mins trot.
Then, back into full work.

My vet checked her on week 4, so some trot was seen and as she appeared to be good, told to carry on with programme.
My final week is this week and the vet is coming out to check her again before we resume full work.

She's fit, that's for sure :). I do my trot in a block, I don't split it up.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Hoping I could jump on the back on this post...

I am bringing my mare back to work (hopefully when vet signs off on Friday!) after 2 months off, shockwave after collateral/lateral ligament damage to both front feet.

She has continued to be turned out during her time off (coming in at night) and was treated pre diagnosis, so been in light work since mid June - until complete rest 2 a bit months ago..... My vet has indicated a very slow back to fitness. 6 wks walk, 6 wks walk and trot and then...!?!!?

Has anyone been through this? How much walk did you start with, building to what?

Would appreciate any views or advice.

Many thanks!
