I have a lovely connermara x tb who was diagnosed with inflamed co-lateral ligaments in both fore legs along with a bone cysts last year. This was only bought to my attention as he tripped in walk. He had two months box rest towards the end of last year and then I turned him away for the Winter. During all this time he has never looked lame and everyone has questioned if he really was unsound! Anyway it is time to bring him back into work, obviously he has lost some condition but has been turned away with my cob for the Winter so has had some exercise. My question is firstly the best way to proceed, i.e. shall i just ride him out in walk for short periods gradually increasing over the weeks until I think he is able to cope with a couple of minutes of trot, what sort of time scale should I look at? Also remedial shoeing has been recommended and I have thought of going along the natural balance avenue, would you consider this to be the best option or should I be going into looking at bar shoeing? The vet remained guarded last year as to his recovery but I feel very positive and have treated him with devil's claw and other herbs to aid the healing so I do think he can come back as a light back. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated as I hope if I have enough I can put myself a plan together.
