Just got a lovely well behaved rescue dog. He has been in a foster home and lived with a cat. My cat is not a happy boy! Hissing and growling at the new dog . Dog seems not to be bothered about the cat and will ignore him, but now twice the cat has come up to him and hissed at him and dog has chased cat.

So just would like some advice about new dog coming into cat home and how to help them get along????

As the dog sounds pretty laid back and is only retaliating when the cat is up in his face....I would reprimand the dog for chasing even though the cat is up in his face, cats are much more complexed animals and harder to train, keep them seperated when you are not there to supervise by way of a baby gate, so that the cat has an escape root and can get used to the dog gradually, or u could crate the dog so that the cat can get used to his presence without him being able to chase...they will settle...I bring loads of new dogs and cats into my house on a regular basis....as long as I can reprimand when im there, I never leave them unsupervised and things settle after a few weeks.

agree with Cala's advice.

Dont worry I am sure they will settle down quickly, your cat is probably just feeling a little put out. I recently got a dog after my cat had lived alone for 5 yrs, he was not happy, hissing and swiping at the dog. Now they will eat from the same bowl and he lets the dog lick his head.

What CALA said. We managed it with similar methods bringing a JRT into a house with 2 cats already well established. The cats are also quite feral so we couldn't even handle them to help the situation!

My cat has had to adjust to two new dogs this year and although it was a bit hairy at first they have now settled down and although they have their moments she has adjusted and they have learnt the cat has sharp nails lol!
