I have posted this in the Careers section as well..

Im thinking of moving over to Australia next year to work for a few months using my sports massage qualifications that i will get this year...but i really would like to bring my horse over with me and to keep him in the yard that i possible work in..
So how much does it actually cost to transport horses over there and is it a tricky handling? How does the horse cope with it all? Hasanybody done it?

Thanks for your help!!

Well, considering that your horse would have to go into quarantine for 4 weeks here before you're going and again over there before you come back, plus the costs of the actual flight, I think you're looking at in excess of 10000 pounds to get him there and back again.

I know it was roughly that when one of the racehorses from the yard I used to work at went over there for the Melbourne Cup, and that was 8 years ago, so probably more expensive now.

Maybe not worth it for a few months, is it?

never done it and wouldnt want to either,it will be a long trip and maybe too hot, i know i wouldnt cope with the heat and climate change,so i wouldnt expect my horse would cope, but you never know.

someone i knew took a pony over last year and he told me was gonna cost him (in total) nearly 6kto get the pony over and thro quar ect, how true it is, i dont kno!!!

My sister looked into this last year, think it was around £8000 but can't remember whether that was boat or plane. Plane is quicker but more expensive. The boat takes a LONG time! Don't think it's worth it though to be honest. From what my sister said it's too hot most of the time to ride over there anyway. Don't think would be really fair on your horse to be honest

I flew mine back from NZ in 2005 with IRT (International Racehorse Transport) on a cheap deal as my then boss was flying 23 polo ponies over too - stopping at Sydney, Singapore, Dubai and landing London Heathrow in my eyes he had the very best possible care and that cost just under £6000.

The quarantine place is in Melbourne. Flying a horse from Melbourne to Amsterdam was £3500 last year, then John Parker can bring them into the UK. From Melbourne to UK worked out at just under 5k when I looked into it last year. There is a quarantine period in Melbourne once they arrive and again before they leave. I don't know the costs leaving from UK - Oz.

Oz is a BIG place so depends where you are going. The travelling inland might be longer and harder going than the flight over.

It depends what area you are going to as to how your horse will cope. Victoria and some parts of NSW & QLD have "seasons" like ours so your horse has every chance of adapting well. NT, Western Australia and rural/northern QLD is very hot and dry with sparse grazing. When I was in NT one of the girls transported her horse up from NSW and it adapted well but needed additional feeding.

PS. Could you please pm me how you can get in with your sport massage quals? Are you going on a working hol visa and doing sports mass. over there or do you have another visa arranged and is there a chance to go permanently on your quals? Thanks!
