As title really, does anybody fence judge for BE? I'm really interested in fence judging, and wondered if anyone had any experience of it? :) How often do you take part, what do you do? etc etc etc? :)

Thank you in advanced!

you might get more of a response in CR... ive only fence judged at unaff events, but its a good day out, and if you get an 'interesting'! fence then it can be really fun :) if you get a fence that everryy single person jumps clear though, it can be a bit boring, but i would definatley give it a go :)

I fence judge, it's fun but you need to be prepared for all weather, take a flask and a friend. Briefings are held each day so you know what to do.

Agree with all above. A friend and I fence judge. It is great fun but it is a very long day. We have always been well looked after though, people come round with tea/Lunch etc all day.

You need to have great concentration and if you have fallers, the paperwork is very long!
We were at a water combination a couple of months ago and had 4 fallers in quick succession! I was filling in paperwork and trying to do timers and radio transmissions all at once!

But it is great fun and highly recommend it :)

Thanks guys.
Is there a age limit on who can be a fence judge?
Does it matter that I can't drive?
What would you wear? :)

And, I guess most people would recommend it? :)

I fence judge fairly often. It gives you a chance to give something back to the sport as well as being able to watch pro riders tackle a jump. I tend to only do the local BE's near me but it's still a help :)

I recommend it :D

Seriously - I would call Milton Keynes and if you can get there this weekend offer to help out, even if not fence judging yourself, maybe you can sit with another fence judge and learn the ropes. If you are in Bedfordshire there are not that many accessable events (trust me I know!), Carlton has already been and gone this year and Keysoe is at the end of September, Bury Farm will be running BE next year and have another test event the weekend of Keysoe or there is the 3 day at MKEC again in September.

I have fence judged at Chatsworth about 5 times and love it, although it is a very long day.

I would say you need:
A friend (couldn't do it with one person, we normally have 3 of us)
Water proof clothes, wellies etc
Chairs in the unlikely event that it doesnt rain and you want to sit outside
Food and Drink (they do provide some but better to have extra

you will have a talk in the morning where they explain how the day is going to run and what fence you have etc. They sometime give you a gift (at chatsworth I have got t-shirts/jumpers that kind of thing).

Then you pick up your:
stop watch
flags
booklet for writing down times and numbers
pens
whistle
lunch

I have always had a great time and found everyone really friendly. Also get to watch all the top riders walking the course which is really interesting if you get a difficult fence.
