Hi

I'm asking this again because I only got one answer in the Career and Education section :(

I have an interview at the british racing school and was wondering what kind of questions they ask so I can be prepared and if anyone has been there I would love to hear what it was like :)

Oh and what kind of smart clothing should I wear I dont want to look over dressed

Thanks any help will be appreciated :)

Hi! I went to the 9 week taster day the other day. By the sounds of things they are looking that you're not a delinquent and you're able to get on with other people and you'll work hard. They don't need horse experiance as a pre-requisite. Look clean and tidy, good fitting black trousers, shirt and jumper should be suffient no jeans, no 'favorite' shoes, brush your teeth and give the impression that you're consiencitous and dedicated to the racing industry!

Just thought- don't wear heels- you need to be able to walk around the yards! make sure your shoes are clean and shavings free!!!

im going to apply to go to the BRS once ive done my GCSE's it looks a good place, they are meant to be a bit strict but you get used to it aparently, are you doing the foundation apprenticeship? i assume you just need to show your prepared to get up at 5am every day and show your keen, obviously if you turn up looking like a tramp and say im too lazy to get up at 5am your not going to get in, PM me on how you get on, ill be interested to know as im planning on going there to :) good luck!

I had an interview there and got in but didnt go.
I wore a smartish pair of black trousers and i think a shirt and cardi but just something not yard wear really - shoes something sensible to walk in and get off easily!
Be prepared to be weighed - they want to know exactly even if you submitted it on your form!
If you've got horses they'll more than likely ask what the plan is with them if you should get a place.
They'll want to know what other plans you have in mind if you fail to get in and why you want to attend BRS.
They may be interested in what riding you've done before - if you've done xc how you feel about riding at speed etc. I was asked how I would feel about being put on something naughty/known to be quirky.

How you'd feel about being away from home/minimal parents visit, and have you stayed away for a longish period before?

Appearance should be clean and tidyr - you have a look in the accromodation so don't be wearing muddy footwear, and prorbably tie hair back if its long and likely to get windswet as u may look around before you're interviewed!

But above all, don't worry! As long as you're not a complete moron/arrogant little bugger you should be fine (and judging by the fact you're keen on getting some tips you're not!) Just be polite - please and thank you, maybe have a question ready for them when they ask and be confident but not over confident!

Take references if u can and any certificates etc from school or
Pony club/riding club that sort of thing!

And enjoy it!

Good luck - when is your interview? Let us know how u get on!

I hope you get in when you finish college :) and do you know why your friend didn't like it? (just wondering really)

I've heard from people on other forums that you wouldn't have enough time for your own horse(s)

I went to the BRS on the 9 week course i was heavy too but I had experience with race/horses and had done nvq2 in horsecare it was more to the fact learning to ride 'race' style as could ride quite well but needed more experience and boss had said to me it was best place to go as better to learn there and get the qualifications to go with it. I absoutly loved it best thing ive ever did (i was 19 when i went after doing college and then job with horses after that) but there were a few people who were 18 and then 16/17 year olds. I learnt so much and made some of my best friends there, they understand your passion for horses. I went back to my employer and spent 6 years there did my nvq2/3 and travelling qualifications and was 3rd travelling head girl to my boss and went to ireland and france with horses. I am now using my experience to travel around the world while working with horses, have just come back from 9 months in germany as a sj groom travelling around europe and am in a few days am off to malaysia for 3 months as a trail guide.
It is very hard work and long hours and some of things you may think why? but I would say if you can deal with being abit home sick and long hours and doing the p.e. fitness stuff (that was hard) but it is soooo worth everything and ive never regretted a single second of it and fully encourage anyone to do it. i have loads of friends that have been to the nrc and loved it too. both fantastic schools.
If you have any questions let me know
