I’m very interested in competing with BS but I’m not very sure of how to go about it. I’m a teenager, and find all the info a bit overwhelming, could someone please explain quite simply some info about how to start and the different levels? TIA x

Its a bit complicated - you might have realised that!

Club competition is probably the simplest and easiest. Classes at 70cm - 1m competing for league points not prize money. As long as you as a rider do not have any points on the horse / pony that you ride (i.e. as a combination) in the last three years you are eligible. There are no age / height restrictions - and only one membership fee.

Otherwise - if you are under 16 you can compete a pony 148cm or less. You need to be a member, so does an adult and so does the pony. Classes from 70cm - 1.10. As your pony gains more points from double clear rounds the number of classes they are eligible for reduces.

If you are under 16 but your horse over 148cm you are looking at the children on horses series. Same principles as above but fewer classes.

If you are over 16 you compete as a senior. You can compete a pony - but the stride lengths are all set for horses so you might come up a bit short. You and the horse separately have to be registered.

Does this help? I could write an essay on the various permutations. Is there something specific you wanted to aim for? Are you under or over 16; what height is your ride and do they have any points?

So you'll be looking at seniors or club.

Club is £30 per year for both of you. You compete for league points leading up to a single national championship. Class heights range from 70cm - 1m. Fairly simple.

Otherwise you'll be an associate member until the year in which you turn 18 - that's £103 per year. Plus horse - the affiliation fee depends on grade, but if you get a grade C that's £81. There are new member discounts and discounts if you are a pony club or riding club member.

The qualification structure is significantly more complex and there are a lot of variations to aim for. But the basic principle for most is that four double clears puts you through to second rounds; then 10 to qualify for National Championships.

The levels are dependent on points. The horse gets a set number of points for every clear round jumped. You compete at Novice (95cm) until the horse has 125 points; Discovery (1m) until they get to 225. Then Newcomers (1.10) until 325 points and Foxhunter (1.20) until they have 700. There are also Bronze, Silver & Gold amateur leagues - and of course classes for horses with more than 700 points - at grades C, B and A. A Grade C horse as 0 - 999 points. A Grade B 1000 - 1999 and a Grade A 2000+

Once you get started you'll find most of it is quite logical - but it does seem overwhelming at first!
