hi there.

i was just wondering - how many of you prefer horses from the continent to our very own british breds????

only - i remember when all the untouchable horses were irish sport horses combining the draught with something more athletic and how we used to win everything ....

now however its a different story -

look in the top SJ classes for exapmle and you'll find them bursting at the seems with horses from the continent!!!!!!

dont you think its about time we turned our attention back to british breeding and showed the world what the best of the british can do - on the best bred british horses???

what do you think?? or suggest???? would you favour one over the other?? or am i talking nonsense!?!?!?

I prefer british breeds

I had recently a TBxID who was extremely bold but naturally a little clumsy, not a great trait in a sj (or xc horse, 2 bad falls!). It was always 4 faults, again and again, and she just could not learn how to jump planks.

My current horse is from Dutch warmblood breeding and is a much more natural jumper. Useless at almost anything else, spooky except over coloured fences but definately a willing and careful jumper.

I'm still a great fan of Irish horses though, the mare above had many good traits and was just a common or garden cross, I dare say a cross of a good ID jumping mare or stallion would be a lot different.

Depends on how high up the ladder you are aiming for. SJ'g has changed over the years, the poles are lighter the cups shallower. Eventing has changed as well, so the types of horse may well change to take into account better dressage scores. Even the Irish have introduced WB's to their breeding so there are fewer IDxTB. But they have no option if this is the type of horse that wins classes & this is what riders want. It is not just about breeding anyway, there is the way the horse is produced to take into account. If you can't ride the animal, makes no difference how good he/she is. A poor rider will ruin any potential a horse may have.

completely agree with magic - my first horse was a hackney x and jumped the world at only 15.1hh then i bought my BWP who is amazing and a natural jumper !!

Since then i have bred an Irish Draught x my BWP mare who has turned out amazing the laid back attitude of an ID but with the presense and look of a warmblood !!

I do like the continental horses to be honest but if a british bred horse can do the job then i wouldnt say no !!
