My horses mane and tail is brittle and dry. The hair snaps when you brush so it is thin and like a bog brush. I brush very seldomly to minimise breakage.

Diet wise he is out 24/7 and has ad lib hay and a single feed of soaked grass nuts with grass chaff, cup if micronised linseed and equimins metabalance.

What else can I do? Tried Megatek, but didn't see much difference

What I do is wash, rinse shampoo out thoroughly, condition, rinse after 5 mins. Squeeze mane and tail with a towel to dry off a bit (NO rubbing!) Then spray with Avon Skin So Soft while damp. The oil helps keep the moisture in and also is a fly repellant.

I avoid mane and tail spray wherever possible as I think the silicon dries things out.

It works for us!

Yours is a cob so naturally has a great mane and tail. Mine is Appaloosa, so needs all the help he can get! Unlike lots of appys he has lots of hair, but it just snaps as it grows. So potential to have a decent mane and tail if I can keep the hair!

I tend to use human conditioner - we have Tres Semme (however you spell it :p ) at the moment! Alberto Balsam strawberries and cream is also very moisturising, and smells fab!

Really I mean to avoid the silicone in the mane and tail spray/show sheen. I believe the people who make Megatek make a silicon free one, but like I say, I find Avon Skin So Soft works just as well as it's a dry oil spray and seems to help with flies too.

Don't have cob hair jealousy, honestly - it's soo pretty, but it really is a lot of work to keep looking nice, and it gets all under the saddle and around the reins when you ride if, like me, you're too lazy to put it in running plaits :p

Do you have a pic of your appy? I love love love spotties and am currently drooling over 2 for sale on Preloved!
