i'm new to this, so here goes!
well, i fell off my boy in middle of october whilst jumping, went to A&E to find out i had broken my ankle. very well, went home and into check up 2 weeks later to be told i needed surgery to put 2 screws in. i had surgery last week and i'll be off the road for another 2 months at least, so horsey is having himself an unsceduled holiday! basically i was wondering if anyone else had broken their ankle and how they had coped afterwards, if it was weaker for riding, less flexible etc etc? i just want some advice because he has to be sold in the summer because i'm off to uni and dont want to waste any more time on the sidelines! if anyone has any ideas, tips for maintaining flexibility, they'd be most appreciated.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Guess what i did today :S Link to the post....

BIOFLOW MAGNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GET ONE NOW!

Seriously though, i broke my ankle very badly when my horse fell on top of me, i had a bone move in side of head, ligamnet damage, whiplash, back problems ! Just a mess really! Anyway, i was in a cast for 3 weeks! I went for a check up at the hospital , i had had the magnet on for 3 weeks as my mother sells them.
Anyhoo, the doc could not believe how such a serious break was mending soooooooooo well! I was able to walk without crutches!

I didnt know it was such a big deal becuase i was 15 and no experiance of recoverey time but i know realise it was really just amazing! I had weekly physio (PRIVATE, dont go with the hospital physio as just sh*T) Also osteopath helped alot and she used a ultrasound kind of thing on me, not that sure what it was! sorry!

Anyhoo i got my cast off at 4 weeks and i was back riding and at about 2 months! so i really reccomend getting a bioflow magnet , also take vitamins, regular stretches, lay done on bed, floor or chair and just lift lleg up and down, doing two legs at a time is harder so mix between one at a time or two at a time. You really need to make sure you just dont waste away, eat healthy, take vitamins, maybe get some free weight like i did to work arms and stomach as you will just lose all muscle as humans lose muscle quickly!

sorry i hope i help pm for more help and info! get better hun

Not had a broken ankle, but I broke my leg in the summer. I was told not to ride for 6 months, so you're lucky!
Muscle wastage is a problem, it just dropped off my leg, its so much skinnier than the other one now!
I've been to the physio a lot, and have lots of exercises to do to keep full movement in anlke and knee.

I broke my ankle in 2004. Fractured it in 3 places, had 13 screws and a large plate. I was in plaster for 7 weeks and then took a while to get muscle tone back in my calf. Also the ankle was much less flexible. The flexibility improved when I had the screws etc removed 6 months later, but it is still a little stiffer then the other one.

All of this said...I was riding the day the cast was removed and competing again in dressage 3 weeks later and jumping 4 weeks later.

Echo this advice, I have been wearing my horses bioflow boot every night and taking syhmptum from the health shop. Broke my tib and fib Sept 15 Tues, had a rod and 3 screws in on the friday and the xray on week 5 showed it had healed fantastically with new bone growth.

cos I had the rod in, I only had a cast on for 10 days, so got back on my horse 3 weeks after the op and started with light hacking. 6 weeks after, took my horse to the beach, 7 weeks after I went and did my first trec comp!!

Hope you heal quickly x

thanks everyone for all your help, I'm going to see a sports physio this afternoon and I've ordered a magnet!
I'm just not looking foreward to being in plaster for ANOTHER 9 weeks!!!
