Sitting on my horse bareback, walking down to his paddock and out of nowhere a flock of guinea fowl fly into him squaking etc. Buck, buck and buck and I come off. Broken humerus (upper arm near the shoulder socket) and no riding or much of anything for several months.

Of course, no one around, pick myself up, lock up the horse and drive myself to hospital. They say, "Would you sign this?" "Um, I'll be glad to once you stabilize my broken arm!" Sigh...they don't use casts unless you're 10 with friends who'll poke your arm...I get a sling and have to learn to sit up and sleep for the future. This is not good.

I think I may be having roasted guinea hen in the future when all the parts work again. Typing one-handed is not pretty...and it's my right arm of course.

What nothing??? For a high break?

Yes, they're very tasty. As an aside - don't they make a flippin' row?

Ah, I was going to ask - well at least you've a hand to gather the reins to get on! Might not be so much fun getting off again though!

good luck with the recovery - it seems a long time now but once you're the other side of it it doesn't seem as long honest (been there, done that, although different bones :D)

Biggest advice is even if you're not activly sore keep on top of your pain meds for the first month or so as it's easier to stop it being sore than it is to get rid of pain once it comes (I hope that makes sense) Plus go buy lots and lots of pillows including one of those v-shaped ones as that will help you sit up without falling to the side. It's amazing how quickly you get used to sleeping sat up

That is really bad luck. I had a pheasant fly out from under spooky mates nose a few weeks ago and she just snorted! Was I surprised.
having just recently had a broken collar bone I know being one handed is no easy thing. Hope you've got someone to pamper and do for you.

Guinea fowl are so loud! Up until recently I had 23 of them!!! They lived at night in next door stable to my boy. I have kept 3 and love them, so hilarious.

So sorry about your accident, sounds really painful. Hope you heal quickly.

The surgeon looked at my radiographs, said the bones are nicely together and since the shoulder is so mobile they don't worry about a degree or two difference in angle. He's hoping no surgery!

When they handed me the sling (with a very painful pain shot) I was told I'd see th orthopaedist Monday...WHAT! I thought, no plaster? No splint? No...nothing, they use the weight of the arm to keep everything alligned. I keep reading the info on the drugs..."constipation" seems to be the big thing..just what I'd need, another problem.

My cats are happy, a warm and non-mobile soft spot. After a few days of watching what pass for entertainment, I know why some people are scrambled and vote the way they do.

Oh I feel your pain. I got caught when over excited horsy bucked in field. This was nov! 4 weeks in full pot past elbow and another 4 weeks bith a brace, they then decide to operate. Operating tomorrow.

Lots of pain killers and lots of pillows to support and basically catch a nap when you can. Net flux isn't too bad for filmy stuff on their 30 day trial, books are hard to balance so I ended up getting a kindle.
Good luck and I hope you heal fast

I'm going with they put you on codeine? In which case make sure you are on some sort of laxative cause they do bung you up a bit  Speak to your pharmacist about what will suit you most as there are various options. (warning movicol is nasty, horrid stuff, don't let them sell you that)

I know the feeling - have been sat on my butt for 4 weeks now and am bored as anything. The only thing keeping me sane is my study - I can at least get ahead as I have at least another 5 weeks non-weight bearing then several weeks on crutches teaching my ankle how to walk again

Here's hopeing you don't need surgery on it and it knitts well :D

You cant splint/cast a break that high up....in order to immobilise it you'd have to totally cast up and around the shoulder......

If it was mid-shaft possibly they'd pin it...

Hope they gave you good painkillers.....:)

Ah, I wondered about that and thought someone in the know might illuminate - my daughter is on a course and so incommunicado.

Ah er...hmm... it's only when you are forced to do EVERYTHING one handed that you realise how handy it is to have two isn't it? You might find the painkillers o.k. in that department - they don't affect everyone the same - you certainly don't want a dose of the opposite I can tell you - not with only one hand to open doors and deal with zippers in a hurry. That's enough info on that I think!

Ooh dear are you going to the fracture clinic? I broke my arm, completely detaching the triceps tendon and A&E sent me away and said to take paracetamol... LOL. Turned up at my doctors crying, they gave me codeine and said how ridiculous I was sent away.

I had surgery to sew on the tendon and just had a sling, but you will probably get patched up better after the clinic, hang in there, hope it gets better soon!

Be sure to arrange an array of pillows for sleep time, very sore :-(

I dislocated my elbow last year falling off an I must say from the pain killers the constipation was horrendous!! I mean I didn't go for 2 weeks at one point!! I had to go and get lactose from the doctors. Only having one arm used to annoy me aswell, luckily I did my left arm but I could put my arm up, do my bra up, could only do loose fitting trousers on.
We have 2 guinea foul at the farm and we keep trying to get rid of them, they just don't shut up!!!

OUCH!

My old mare used to spook at the usual stuff, plastic bag flapping in the hedge, starling farting, post boxes, crossing a babbling brook on a bridge....

...mother took her out and two cars have a head on right next to her...

...she did not even blink.

go figure.

I had a commutated fracture of the humerus it was broken in 8 places and all they did was hang it round my neck from a pink spongy sling. Was four months before I could lie down to sleep. Most painful thing I have ever done and wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy. Worst thing that happened while it was sore was someone opening a door when I had my bad hand on the handle the pain shot up my arm
Hope you have a speedy and uneventful recovery eat plenty fibre and avoid processed food and your tum should stay ok
Telly is boring but at least you can sleep through it

Hello.

I've done the exact same thing. Get tonnes of pillows as laying down will be impossible.

Don't worry. It will heal. Its just awkward moving for a while. But do ask for extra physio as I still don't have full movement. No pain though and no major probs.

I hated my arm being stuck next to my skin the most. And not being able to wash my armpit! Antibac and deo wipes are your friend for the next couple of weeks!

Codeine is fab, just eat loads of fried onion with everything. Get one of those anyway bras that you can have strapless, halter, x back, normal etc & find a combination you can put on & off. You can sleep flat on your back, just use extra pillows to position your arm. Or on your front/good side with pillows propping your arm.
<whispers> if you can find a safe horse, its possible to ride in a sling once you are back out & about.

I love this - when I broke my ankles my mom wouldn't let me on until I had my last cast off (I was an adult but would have needed help to get on plus if she thought I was going to try she wouldn't have driven me to the yard so I had to behave ) but I was on my sister's cob the day I had my last cast off, still couldn't really use that leg and had only been weight bearing on the other one for about 4 weeks :D It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it - not that I'd recommend it, ever, no, not once - should always be fully healed before riding :rolleyes:

I took Dulcolax when I was on Tramadol. Worked a treat!

Had to laugh at the next comment. I had to work at home for 4 weeks and urrrghhh! The tellybox ended up being switched off. I took to going on long walks and even went shopping on the bus! I had a lovely time actually. OH looked after the ponies for 4 weeks. :D

p.s. My break was my wrist (distal radius) and after the cast was removed, it was sooooo useless. I know your arm will be painful now and feel fragile, but you won't have the muscle wastage you get with a cast, which will be a HUGE benefit. It took me months of going through the pain barrier to get mobility back!

Hope you managed to get some sleep last night. I was on codeine paracetamol and ibprophen ..it worked :D however the night after I was operated on my mind was doing very very weird things:eek: suspect it was the post op painkillers rather than the codeine.

I've been trying to do too much with my left hand...I sprained my wrist a bit and opening doors/jars etc. is a challenge..won't even think about zippers right now and buttons aren't my friends either.

Sleep...I catnap and wake up at odd times. I've tried every chair in the house...no wonderful ones yet but I'm not giving up yet. Luckily I have a Kindle and lots of books available with no page turning. Everyone is helping with my guys, great friends.

I'm a bit paranoid of falling, but I'm getting over that. Chinese take-away is a great cure for painkiller side-effects...I can't work chopsticks left handed and am using a spoon for most everything. I'm really trying not to be a wimp...so far, so good! My cats are really really happy with my captivity.

Thanks for the kind thoughts...sure wish I bounced like when I was 20.

Sorry you are not getting much sleep I slept in a single bed with a board at 45 degree angle covered in pillows a v one to stop me slipping down and lots of others around it to support my arm and shoulder. OH adapted the bed and I eventually managed really well to sleep.
I managed to burn my leg with black coffee that my dad made me it tipped and of course I couldnt catch the cup and pull the material of my clothes off my skin so got a nasty burn as well so be careful
The best physio I had was hydrotherapy it was great and worked really well and as I had a shower before and after and went every other day I managed not to get smelly. Inside of my bad hand got very bad for a start though I thought someone had died for a start that was while I was in hospital though once they let me out I managed the shower quite well
