Hi, six weeks ago I broke my hip/femur after my horse touched an electric fence whilst I was trying to open the gate on a bridleway. Have had it mended with pins and plate. Am wondering if anyone has had a similar injury and how long before you could ride. I've been told it will take 12 weeks for me to recover. After six weeks am able to walk with one crutch but not do much more without too much pain. Patience is a virute, I know but don't think I was given this one! Thanks for any advice

I would take advice from you doctor. 12 weeks in the grand scheme of things isn't that long.... and better to heal properly, rather risk getting on board horsey too soon and causing a setback with your healing process

Oh poor you. The answers are correct follow your doctors advice I know how frustrating this must be for you. I have not had that serious a fracture but when I fractured my ankle and when I had a knee operation I spoke to my specialist both times and before I started riding again I did some low pressure work on an exercise bike it helped get my muscles back working before I sat on something that needed control.

BUT dont start doing anything like this until you are told to. 12 weeks seems like a long time now but its better to wait and be right than rush things.

No advice on the hip, but wondered whether you had made a complaint to the person who had put the electric fencing so close to the gate?
Or is this considered acceptable - no idea as I have never had land on a public right of way.

I broke my pevis 3 years ago when my TB mare reared and fell on me. Pelvis was crushed and had 2 breaks and a fracture. Was in hospitak 2 weeks and on crutches for 4 weeks/ They said I wouldn't ride for 6 month, was back on just 7 week after accident! Not sayin its the best way to do things as you do need to listen to doctor, just trying to give you a bit of hope!

Many thanks for all your replies and encouragement! For info fence wasn't marked, but the farmer is a friend of my husband's farming family ... Hey ho! I wouldn't mind but I have a bridleway across my land and am always so conscious about access. So much so that some kind person let my two horses out about a month before my accident! Fortunately, they didn't come to any harm even though they managed to find themselves on the main road three miles away! Answer to solution, never buy land with public access, 'tis a nightmare.
