Well here I am…hero to zero 😫 All was going well and then an unfortunate fall and kick has resulted in me breaking my Fibula.
Clean break, currently with a temporary cast on, non-weight baring with crutches awaiting details on an appointment at the Fracture Clinic next week. I haven’t cried today so I must be getting my head around things.
Horses at home and my amazing friend is poo picking every day and checking the horses for me. So I do have that to be thankful for ❤️
Can I hear some positive stories please on recovery and any advice 🤞🏻

You will be fine! I have broken both legs at different times. The first time was about 15 yrs ago, I spent 6 weeks in a cast, non-weight-bearing for the first week. The only problem was that I got an Infection in the stitches and needed extra time off work while that cleared up.
The 2nd time was about 5 yrs ago and I made a real mess of both bones, had to have external metal rings holding everything in place while it all healed. That took about 6 months and then rehab time with physio for 2 mire months.

I did much the same 4 years ago, clean break and wore a boot thing for a few weeks, back to riding in about 6 weeks. I would add that I was 63 at the time so healing may have taken longer! than younger bones!!

Couldn't get long boots on for a couple more months, but Ariat paddock boots and their stiffer gaiters solved the issues and gave support.

Hope you heal quickly, just a bit of patience will go a long way to help.

Thank you everyone.
I suppose I’ll know more about the road ahead after my appointment next week. I’m fully prepared for a cast rather than a boot and still to be non weight baring.
It’s my left leg so my mounting leg but also my non driving leg for the auto car…but I do know you have to check with insurance re driving but I’m not feeling like going anywhere at the minute 🙃 And certainly no riding anytime soon. My friend is riding the (culprit) youngster a couple more times this week and then he’ll be turned away until next year. This was the plan anyway, just a month earlier than planned!
It’s my birthday on Wednesday so I bet that’ll be my appointment day 😆🎉

This sounds positive! Well done on that speedy recovery. I’m 46 and I’ve not broken a single bone until now so can’t compare with any young bone injuries 😳

Hate to be Debby Downer but I would work on over six weeks, and be pleased if its only that long.
Yes agree. I had a hip fracture in April, it required surgery with the bones being nailed together, so slightly different to you. At 6 weeks there was no sign of the bone knitting together, at 10 weeks there was some sign in one small area and I have fingers crossed for more progress at the next xray. They keep telling me it is a severe break though. Sorry, this probably isn't what you want to here!

A bit different but I had a hip fracture in April. No surgery but with restricted weight bearing on crutches for 8 weeks. It had healed by the time I attended the fracture clinic at 11 weeks. Make sure you follow all instructions that you're given, including any physio exercises if this applies, and rest. Also check that your diet has all the nutrients for bone health - calcium, vitamin D and plenty of protein (I aim for 80g a day). It's a nightmare when you're used to being active but the weeks will pass and you'll get there.

My husband broke his fibula attempting to catch a lamb. Came home from hospital in a cast up to his hip. Not funny when you live in a caravan. Full length for a week then a short one up to his knee and a boot. A friend who had been a nurse told him to walk on it as much as he could. He did and when the cast came off he hadn't lost any muscle at all. That was 1990. Never bothered him again. I had an automatic Daf at the time so as he didn't need his left leg to drive it he carried on driving. Got some funny looks sometimes when people saw him getting in to the driving seat with his leg in plaster.

All heading in the right direction! I now have support boot on rather than a cast so can get about much better.
Estimating 6 weeks with it on or less depending on pain levels.
And we’ve bought an all-terrain mobility scooter so I can take the dogs for a walk and pop down the paddock to see the horses.
All in all things could be a lot worse so I’m very grateful 😊

I broke mine in 2019. They gave me a boot of doom as it was stable and clean. This meant that I could still gently swim and after two weeks I was back riding, switching from boot to supportive riding boots and back. I was only hacking in walk, then introduced a bit of trot after two weeks and ditched the boot completely after 4 or 5 weeks. I've never had a peep out of it. Didn't need physio or anything. I still have the fancy pants dressage boots but have yet to ride a dressage test. Oh well.😂

I did a bad tib/fib in 2022. It was a mess with bits shattered off so took 4 and a half hours of surgery to fix. 10 pins and 2 plates and 12 weeks recovery- 6 in cast and 6 in boot.
I was back riding week 12 (day after I got the all clear to remove the boot).

I remember you posting about that. Wasn't it a nasty fall out hacking? Is it all ok, now?

Yep, a bad fall out hacking alone.
It’s absolutely fine now thank you. The only time I notice it is if I crouch down and the ankle joint is ‘bent’ then when I stand up again it clicks and clunks quite noticeably for a few moments and feels a bit stiff, but soon eases off again. I smashed through the joint so assume that’s related to that.

Sorry to hear about your injury. No encouraging story from me, but I fell off and broke my pelvis last week so we are in the same boat! Wondering how soon I can persuade someone to hoist me back into the saddle 😂 (joking, I promise- it'll be at least 12 weeks for me 🤪).
Good luck with your recovery.

Oh gosh, that sounds nasty. Thank you.
Wishing you a successful and speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹
