yesterday on the way back from the field i fell over in the snow, funny yes...well no not really i landed funny on my leg and somehow i managed to break it? i have week bones and have broke alot in the past. so now i have a cast on and have had to put wax stuff ontop so i can feed horses at the field. so painful.the kids have been a huge help walking the dogs ext and helping me at the field. problem is the snow how the hell do you walk in snow with a pot on!????has anyone got a broken leg or something and have to feed there horses in this weather?? the snow is up to my thigh so is very deep at the field... stress stuff always goes wrong in the worst weather!!???

So sorry to hear this. Is the cast above or below your knee? I usually enjoy the snow (despite my advancing years) but this time I'm being ultra cautious. I broke my right wrist and back last May and had a hysterectomy five weeks ago and I'm terrified of breaking something else and being on the 'sick list' for even longer. I'd never had any fractures before these and didn't realise how painful they are. Take care of yourself.

Hi Sbp,

Firstly my sympathies for you with a broken leg. Hope it recovers quickly and well.

But you really shouldn't be trying to get across snowy fields with a pot on. You should be resting and not weight bearing at all if you only broke it yesterday. But I think you know that anyway, and I'm guessing (forgive me if I'm wrong) that it's a case of having to because you've got no other help. Is there really nobody at all who you can call upon to help? I know the weather's exceptional and people might be less keen to go out in it if they don't have too - and of course the horses themselves are vitally important - but at the same time, your own circumstances are exceptional too and you really do need to look after number 1 and hopefully there's somebody nearby who appreciates that and will be able to lend you a hand. Please, please, try and find some help, rather than attempting to do it yourself.

Sorry, I'm not much help myself - but am concerned for you.

Wishing you all the best.

yes they said to take it easy but horses need doing. kids are helping bless them and that is a big heelp and have a few friends offering to help tomorrow but cant today as they are working. and to be honest apart from the people i have already asked i wouldnt trust anyone else to do it properly. i have a bit of ocd and i stress that they will not be done "properly" sounds stupid i know but even if they do them i would probably end up going down to check again lol. my partner is away on holiday (lucky b******) so pretty much all i can do.

(((((())))) sorry to read your news. Rotten luck in this weather. Hope you are able to get the leg up when you are not trying to reach the horses. Take care.

Poor you! My mum is a radiographer and was just telling me this morning how many broken leg/arms she had x-rayed yesterday due to the snow so you're far from the only one to have taken a tumble!

You could try a cast protector, something like;-

http://www.cast-protector.co.uk/?gclid=COTLw9PBzaUCFYUe4QodD0Sjjw (not the most attractive thing in the world..)

or http://www.limboproducts.co.uk/?gclid=CPys-J_CzaUCFQse4QodZxXgkQ

I can't believe you are managing to get around on it already it must be painful! When I broke my foot I couldn't do anything without crutches for weeks. Make sure you don't do too much or you will set back your recovery which is counter-productive in the long run.

thank you i will have a look now x yes very painful! but i will rest it as soon as i am done. thanks again all of you and i will take up your advice (as much as i can)

I broke my leg (tibia) on 31st oct - or rather my horse did when he threw me off then kicked me!

I've got a full cast on, thigh to ankle. No weight bearing for 3 months so crutches and wheelchair.

I live alone and if my friend was not helping me and doing the horses I have no idea how I would cope, I also now have a dog walker as walking them (walking at all) is impossible.

santaboooogypie - so sorry to hear about your leg, I now know how it feels! Just after the accident you really need to keep your leg elevated and rest. I was on my crutches I think too much the first few days and ended up with a very painful haematoma up the back of my calf. You really need to think about yourself now and accept help albeit in your eyes not 'perfect'. You are at real risk of causing yourself more problems. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

This has certainly woken me up to the responsibilities of animals when you yourself are broken! Also the dangers!

big sympathy, OP.
i can highly recommend the limbo products, i have a full-length one that worked perfectly for baths, showers etc.
as for the horses, beg or bribe a local farmer to take a big bale and drop it in the field, and get someone to fill up all the water troughs, and relax. the horses will survive with those (as long as they're well rugged or have shelters?), if you have brittle bones the LAST thing you should be doing is struggling in the snow with a newly broken leg, pot, etc.
Sometimes you have to put yourself first. Make sure the horses are okay and then control your OCD... good luck!

Sorry to hear about your leg, is there anyone on here that is close to you who would'nt mind doing the basics for you? Unfortunatly im in Scotland so to far away.
Could you get a local farmer to drop a big bale over the fence for you, that way water would be the only thing needing checking.
Hope you mend soon without any probs.

Agree with teddybullys advice. you need to rest your leg or you could end up with more problems, you will have to trust your friends

My worry is that you are going to do more damage to yourself which will ultimately leave you being laid up for longer. OCD or not you need help. There must be somebody you can call on surely? You have responsibilities to your family and yourself as well as your horses. I'm a control freak too when it comes to my horses but when you are broken you have to acknowledge that just sometimes you can't do it all yourself.

I'm desperately sorry for the predicament you are in and hope you heal quickly. But please take care, you really could cause more damage this way.

thank you all for your get wells x:D has really cheered me up, ive been on a bit of a downer since i did it. my friends have been a big help today! luckily the snow is stopping them from working :p so they can help me out. although i do confess i did go check on them this afternoon
kids are doing a fab job of looking after the smaller animals ie the dogs and cats ext so feel ok that i am coping good enough at the moment and enjoying a sit down for the first time in a long time. :)

yes i have ordered a limbo leg bag thing. i think it would be very useful thank you everyone who suggested it hopefully it will be here in the next few days (lots of snow so may take longer) hopefully it will heal quick so i can get out and about :)
again thanks all for advice and i promise i will try and rest it xxx

SBP,

Please do rest!! I talk from bitter experience. I've broken my ankle twice in 2 years, first time I didn't rest up (was back in work 4 days after and did it whilst moving house and horses!) and after a week the swelling was soooo bad I ended up having to take longer off work. Honestly a big bale in the field and they'll be just fine.

I also rate the limbo leg protector, I didn't have one the first time and so missed out on my baths! I'd have been stuck this time round without it as a broken back and ankle doesn't make showers very easy at the best of times.

Wishing you FEET UP peace and lots of rest!

i hope u manage ok an get better asap. i so feel for you. i fell over yesterday too am now wearing the in fashion plaster cast on my arm. i have been inundated with offers of help to do my horse which has cheered me up. when i fell i couldnt get up. i must have looked like some giant demented yellow maggot wriggling about on the ice.
typing with 1 hand = hard work

Plenty of wise words have been said. Speaking from experience (I broke my radius in late August), I spent 5 weeks in plaster, 3 weeks in a splint and am currently still wearing it when I do anything sport based. I still experience pain from time to time and it is not pleasant. I don't know if this is because it took me 3 weeks to go to the hospital (I thought it was nothing too serious, how wrong I was!) or if it was due to me doing things too soon. I didn't stop riding at all. I went cross country schooling the day after I was put in a pot and a week later when I had a fibre glass cast put on I went cross crountry around a BE Novice height track. Please, please rest. It is really not worth it. Having not broken a bone before I didn't really know what to expect, now I would do things differently, get as much help as you can. Calm the OCD if possible and relax!

Many healing vibes. Hope you make a speedy recovery. :)

Glad you are going to take things a bit easier OP and that you've got friends there helping you. Hopefully you'll be well and mended again before you know it. All the best with your recovery.

Good to hear that you are able to get some rest :). If you don't you'll end up like many of us who have done too much too soon - the end result is nearly always needing time off at some point in the future (the body seems to take what it needs one way or another!).

Fingers crossed that you heal quickly and well :)
