broken neck?

Hmm, it's not to do with were the horses neck breaks when in an outline is it? Such as at the 3rd vertebrae rather then the poll

A broken neck means the horse is over bent.

Really? I've never heard that, you do learn something new everyday.

Instead of there being a uniform curve along the horses topline to its poll (the highest point) there is a point of breakage in the horses "curve" which almost creates a "Point". This means the horse isnt truly in a correct outline and is common as Snowflake said when the horse is overbent.

Well, when a horse goes in an outline they are supposed to break from the poll so the poll is the highest point of the neck but a lot of horses break from the 3rd vertebrae, so that is the highest point.

so is it reversable or is the damage permenant? - or is there no damage, just incorrect muscle build up?sorry im quite interested!!

That's what I'd heard, yes, the neck "seems" broken in a not smooth curved outline, but a "broken" outline. I heard that some of the neck muscles/ligaments are damaged in this case too.

This is taken from the Sustainable Dressage website, but they are good photographic illustrations of a "broken" neck and a correct outline:

Yes, "breaking at the poll" or "overbent" are the words I'd use to describe this, never "broken neck".

To me, a broken neck is exactly what it says on the tin.....because I have a horse who actually broke his neck, as in bones.

It's an old term for a horse who overbends...from anything other than the atlas/axis part of the neck.
It is often a sign that a horse has been pulled into an outline using draw or running reins by novice riders.
