Just wondering how many of us there are right now? and why/what etc

My story is fractured ankle in Jan 2009 from silly fall. Surgery to correct done wrong so ankle collapsed. August 2010 had replacement ankle joint. Started riding in November 2010.
However things not right so appt with specialist a week ago and xrays showed that the joint has come away from my Tibia so need more surgery to correct it.(never been know before, trust me!!)

Surgery will happen on 29th April another 6 to 8 wks in a cast and not riding for a total of 3 months :(

This is going to be the 4th year running I will have missed the summer season, the first was due to horse lameness problems

Annoying thing is I have a lovely lovely young WB who has just started to work really nicely. I am gutted and at 46 not getting any younger

what is your story?

Thats horrid I knew your story before but cant belive your missing out on another summer! Im not too broken at the moment but the horse is :(. I just cant put any weight down through my legs at the moment as knees suddenly swell and are very painful which is not fun. Horse got battered by other geldings and is swollen all over as someone thought it was a sensible idea to put the mares next to the geldings for the first time, in spring, when they are all coming into season, bright eh?!

yeah it does suck

I can understand why you would be annoyed, poor pony. DO you know what is causing your knee problems?

:(. Well at least the ground is softer in winter to do a bit more out hacking..... not that it really helps but there you go! :p....

And no I damaged the ligament and tendons in my left knee and both of my kneecaps have slipped (hypermobile) but the pain is all new literally in the last week! Always used to be sore and swell a bit but this is something else - think i might take a trip back to the doctors!

ouch poor you! I am going to look at the Kvall stirrups to see if they will help me, wonder if they would help you too?

Broken collar bone, had 4 weeks off so hopefully just 2 weeks off now and be back riding and doing horses, was lucky just to break that really. Was reading racing post and alot off Jockeys are of injured, nor good when it's your livliehood! Hope everyone gets better soon, at least the weather is good at moment so I can enjoy lazing in garden whilst I doing nothing and legs are actually getting some sun for once :)

I'm a bit broken - but feel a fraud saying that!

I broke my fingers on 14th December, had them strapped together etc, went back in January, and they had missed that the end of my middle finger has been shattered! There is apparently 'nothing' then can do :( I am going for physio weekly (feel a fraud as everyone else is there on crutches etc!). Its still all swollen, very bent/wonky, and painful. I am pretty weak in that hand now and at times have been struggling to lead some of the stonger ones so havent even tried riding.

It means i am not able to really take on any visiting mares for my stallion which is a shame - but hes loving being turned out 24/7 with a few girlies!

I'm broken too, it's not even from a fall from a horse, that at least sounds more interesting. I fell off a stool while cleaning high windows and I've taken a chunk out of my shin. The exposed bone doesn't seem to be covering over very well, so I'm sporting a bright pink vetwrap bandage which looks ridiculous - I don't even like pink but it was the cheapest colour. :o

That's on top of my joints that give me problems....

My mare is currently lame too, so at least we are off together.:(

I'm not exactly broken but I can't ride because I am 8 months pregnant. After missing the last 7 months I can't wait to get back on. I worry everyday as my mare is now 17, stay sound my lovely mare, I will be back to ride!

ME! Broke my neck (C2) 4 weeks ago! Thankfully just in a neck brace for 6 weeks but no idea how long I'll be out of the saddle - need to speak to consultant in a couple of weeks time. Really frustrated as I have just bought a new horse to play with as my big lad has had to retire from competitions due to a swallowing problem. This is the last of a long line of broken bones -:o

Feel like a bit of a wimp after reading some other posts! haha

I have repetitive strain injury in my left wrist (and im left handed.. helpful!), and i had physio which helped but about 2 weeks after the physio it went again :(
Have to be careful about which horses i handle and what i do about the yard, good excuse for getting out of carry bales of hay though! I hate getting hay all over me ;)

Also have the symptoms of rheumatiod arthritis in some joints, but had the blood test and i dont have it, so im due physio for my knees and wrists to try and make them better, but for now im just living in pain not knowing what it is  Doctor said not to ride untill im better from this incase i have a bad fall (bad falls are always going to be bad, stiff achey joints arent going to make it much worse  ) but i still ride anyway ;)

Hope everyone recovers soon, i dont even own a horse and only ride at weekends but i dont think even i could cope without riding!
Get well soon everyone!

I dont think i would cope without riding!

Touchstone, have you actually had your leg checked by docter? There isn't much skin on front off shin so could easily be down to bone but of it is I would think that you could have damaged some nerves or poss the bone a bit, and it needs a good clean up and proper dressing to help the skin heal, would iminage if it's fairly big in some cases theyay even skin graft that area, due to the little skin and fat there! Please get it checked not just put vetwrap over it!

Broken but not cos of riding - cracked a rib playing rugby last sunday. new saddle arrives saturday so currently bareback and not fancying that with the ouchiness. reckon i'm going to try it fri though, its driving me mad! yes, I am impatient!

Thanks JBJ, I know I really should get it checked as it is down to exposed bone but it isn't a huge area, it seems to slowly be covering so I'll keep an eye and watch for infection etc. I'm making sure the dressing is changed daily and kept clean. I have a bit of a phobia about doctors :o
If it doesn't improve over the coming week I will go.

Ok sounds slighlty now touchstone (can't quote on mobile) but def get it checked if not better and end off week, I also hate doctors etc but way I look at it is that at least of start off everything healing quickly and correctly then it should hopefully heal quicker and cause leas problems long term, if this makes sense? (I must try and do this thinking for dentist really but Hate them!!!)

Lol! Yep I'm like that for the dentist too! I know you are right and making perfect sense, and it is exactly what I would say to someone else; but I will go if it doesn't improve, it's had over a week already so another week I'm hoping will make a fair bit of difference. I do know of someone who lost a leg due to a similar injury, so I won't mess about too long with it!

I'm not broken myself, unless you count the busted lip one of my work horses gave me today - the freak that he is. My big show horse is broken, possibly never to be ridden again. Out of box rest in August to walk for 3 months before turnout. My other new show horse has pulled a front show that won't be back on till Thursday so I am restricted to riding my work horses, 3 shetlands an my darty - anyone with a broken pony want to borrow one of these to get fit for me?!?!

I am 8 months pregnant so havent ridden since last oct when my event mare was turned out for her end of season break. She is now in and back in work with someone else, the end was in sight ( 5 weeks till baby :) ) untill I dislocated my knee on Saturday at work, now waiting for MRI scan and operation after the birth, im not a happy bunny :( i just want to ride my horse !!
