My dogs tail has been hanging limp today and much of yesterday, I'm very concerned she might have broken it. She is going to the evening surgery at the vets to have it chescked later.

Does anyone have any experince of this???

If it helps shes a 6&1/2 yr female golden retriever

Thank you in advance

I hope you got on ok at the vets.

Have seen cats with a tail that hangs limp so far along it, only on TV vet programmes though. In those instances the spinal cord had been damaged in the tail at the point where it drooped.

If your dog is holding it's whole tail down, maybe it's a sign of pain, more than a specific injury to the tail. I know my dog hurt his back end once and wouldn't wag his tail, climb the stairs etc for a day or two. He was soon sorted out with a dose of anti-inflammatories.

This happened to my oldest dog two years ago, I was told she has 'wagitus' - i kid you not! She had basically strained all of the muscles in her tail and was put on some (very expensive) pain killers for a few days!

My Akita also injured/bruised the base of her tail, as she spins around when playing, and she landed on it

an anti inflammitory jab later and she was fine, her limp tail restored to curly

My Lab suffered this a few years ago. She had broken the end of her tail and had to have about 2 inches amputated off the end.
No idea how she did it but recovery was quick and absolutely no after effects. It still wags for England. In fact she used to wag the bandage off !

My lab gets a droopy tail when she has been swimming alot. I have also heard it refer to as wind burn.

It's just the base of the tail being a bit stiff and worn out after lots of wagging, swimming etc and it recovers in a few days.

Common in labs, retreivers etc.
