I have had my cob for six months now and although initially v. unfit . I now ride her four times a week and she still seems to suffer from what other riders are calling 'broken wind' when we canter or gallop. She has now started puffing just in trot ?? I do not feed her hay. She has always had this, but I put it down to lack of fitness, but now getting worried. Vet coming out Wednesday, but wondered if anyone seen this before ?

^ heave line, it means the horse is having to put extra effort into breathing.

I doubt a genuine case of broken wind would actually be able to achieve canter or gallop. It has been very hot and humid recently and therefore would make any of us huff and puff, especially if we are growing a winter coat. There are all sorts of things that can cause horses to run out of puff so I think having the vet out is the best move. Incidentally, did you not have your cob vetted before purchase? One of the main things they look for is breathing problems.
