Broncing when doing girth up?

So Andy has really been worrying ne lately as he's been so ridiculously calm which as many know is totally out of character for him. Was getting the vet sometime this week to check everything is okay.

But today whilst I did his girth up in the stable (not tied up) he started broncing which is really out of character. Gave him some time to chill then rode and he was foot prefect and couldn't fault him.

So I'm thinking ulcers but surely he would be naughty to be ridden aswell?

Any other suggestions, back will get checked after vet has come and saddle fits fine.

Probably not this but my kissing spine horse was perfect ridden and only ever displayed symptoms after his girth was tightened from the ground. I used to comment to people 'at least he has no ridden problems'. But sadly, the problem progressed from being reluctant to canter on a circle to being explosive under saddle. It could be gastric ulcers, though usually they resent the leg going on more than anything. If he's been quiet lately, he could have a pain issue. It could be anything. Hopefully your vet will be able to shed some light.

His flatwork is the best its ever been and cantering 10m circles easily which makes me think its not ks.

He's had his ulcers bother him before and he wasn't like this, he was a little cold backed and a complete nutter to ride.

The time I really worried was after clipping him normally hes very fresh and that's just a blanket but I fully clipped him and he was too chilled.

My yo's Horse did this. Bronced when tacking up but perfect to ride. Turned out it was his saddle. New saddle and the problem went away. It could be a number of things though. Ulcers, Kissing Spine, Back, saddle. I hope you get it sorted.

Occum's razor

If he's had ulcers before - suspect ulcers.

I know a horse with all the appropriate management (decent amount of turnout, decent diet) who would suddenly explode half way through a schooling session.

There was talk of him being possessed .

Turns out he was riddled with ulcers (vet said caused by previous stress).

Try him on a course of gut aids and see of there's any relief?

So worried about him, will try in a different saddle see if it helps he's in a dressage saddle and I'm wondering whether the girth/ girth straps might pinch when done up.

I just wish you could tall to them and find out what's wrong, he worries me so much.

EB and domino looks like we cross posted but will try him in old saddle and see if there's a difference annoyingly old saddle doesn't fit too well so maybe just girth up.

He's also had a similar fit before where someone went to get on him and saddle slipped, this was before he was clipped though.

My daughter had a little mare that started kicking out when her girth was being done up and when mounted, foot perfect when ridden though. Blood tests showed she had anemia and that her liver and kidneys were under strain, so it was hurting when my daughter mounted. I agree with previous posters, don't panic, try a girth sleeve, but an MOT is no bad thing if it continues, expecially if he has been lethargic. Good luck!

Before you start panicking about ulcers, KS and all things terminal, just check that there is no straw/shavings/hay knitted into the girth. If he's clipped and there is a small piece of anything sharp in the girth (or numnah), he would be very uncomfortable and could well react violently.

Girth and numnah all clean, very anal about that anyway as he's so sensitive. Going to give a girth sleeve a go got a lovely thick fluffy one and poss try other saddle, but getting vet anyway to do louies teeth so might as well get him to check Andy.

Thanks tor tips everyone have definitely calmed me down and got me less worried :)

Indiat that's really interesting, a couple of years ago when I bought him and he wasn't putting weight on and we scoped him which showed ulcers bit vet also mentioned that there was.something up with his liver but nothing to worry about after we sorted ulcers he put weight on fine so never thought more about liver but wonder whether that could be it now. Will makes sure I get his blood tested whenhhe comes out.

Didn't have a chance to pull leg forward as he startee broncing as soon as I dod it up. Not too tight either.

It's s wintec dressage girth with cair so no elastic either.

Interesting.

My new horse did this on Sunday (well humped not bronced but same). Was also good to ride although I did wuss out and lunge first. Now as he was 5 staged vetted on the Monday, I'm thinking not KS although certainly not ruling out ulcers with stress of moving but tbh not really the type I'd have thought.

Clipped to within an inch of his life so I'm thinking that he was cold and sensitive as when I touched his girth area with my iceblock hands he really jumped. Interesting to know how you get on though. Mine is defo off his food but his teeth are a disaster so may be this.

I recently changed my girth to a le tixerant one - world of different in my mares reaction, no longing cow kicking and stamping when its done up, or biting the fence she's tied too.

Id still be thinking ulcers with your chaps history - there is now a fecal test which might help you decide whether or not to try the egusin Oberon linked. Also has he changed weight? Lost weight/muscle? If so you could be pulling the saddle tighter and its pinching.

Hoping it's just something simple, I'm giving him a lot more fibre now (he had a lot anyway but even more now.)

Going to try grithing with super fluffy sleeve tomorrow and see how he is, but gettin gvet anyway as he needs to do teeth etc so will play it by year from there. :)

My horse, fusspot at the best of time and with a history of sore fitting saddles, has a belly clip this and last winter and has been kicking up more of a fuss when the girth first touches his belly. Maybe sensitive skin and the cold of the girth.

Friend horse did the same and turned out to be a liver virus. He was otherwise the picture of health and going very well.
