I am currently looking for my first brood mare and was wondering about insurance. Is it possible to get insurance for them?? Do they put exclusions on for any problems with foaling etc???
My mares are covered under normal riding horse insurance but they are covered for foaling. Not sure if brood mare insurance is cheaper or if there is such a thing?
My mare is insured with NFU and when I rang them to ask about insurance for being a broodmare they said she was already covered under group 2 (I think it was). I will look at insurance for the foal nearer the time I guess, I would hate one to be born with problems and struggle to pay to put them right.
Hi - am sure you have this covered now, as you are ringing them - but wanted to let you know my recent experience! I was amazed when seeking a quote for a new mare that SEIB and couple of others will NOT cover your mare for vets fees if she is ill due to the pregnancy. I went over and over the same ground with them, my example being if my mare colics during pregnancy, is she covered - the response I received was "probably"!!! Now, I can understand why you wont get insurance for vet treatment AT foaling, but I would be really in trouble if my mare was sent for colic treatment because I thought I was covered, and then my insurer could turn around and say it may have been related to pregnancy= not insured!! OUCH!! They DO cover injury etc, however, and would cover the sum insured (market value, etc etc) should the little lady meet her early demise of any illness or injury during pregnancy. I found it very confusing, and she is now insured with a company who class breeding and the insurance of such horses in their lowest risk category!! I am pretty sure the NFU would be fine, I don't know anyone who has had any problems... Anyway! Best of luck with it, and your breeding!!!!! Fingers crossed you never need the insurance anyway!
