Has anyone on here brought a horse/pony from melton sales?

I went in june and had a look around. There was LOTS going for 50.

I am going a week on sat to buy a horse/pony or two. I wanting to bring the on as riding horses/ponies. Give them another chance in life

I did notice alot of studs seem to be selling off there youngstock there.....why? Or is it just a ploy to try and sell them for more if they say its a local stud having to sell due to loss of grazing.

There was also adorable mini american ponys there.

My questions are:

Are there passports likely to be fake - Altered age to make the animal younger or in fact older

Are the riding ones normal there because they are naughty

My most concern is illness's being spread. Such as strangles and so on.

Youngsters probably going to market as people can't afford to keep or bring them on anymore.

Take someone knowledgable with you, check for dehydration in case they've been deprived of water to dumb them down a bit.

It's a minefield but i guess if there was any time to buy at market now is the time.

It breaks my heart going to market, i want to take all of them home :( it's so sad!

I live relatively close to melton and know many people who have bought nice cheap little ponies who have been fine and sound. Just make sure you take someone knowledgable with you. I can't bring myself to go as I'd come back with them all! As I'v heard the meat man takes a lot of them :( and I'd bid with my heart against him! I already have two rescue horses, although one can be ridden so can't take on anymore, although one day I'd love to buy them all!!

Also Pedigree dog food factory's based at Melton too! :( :( :(

Don't want to burst your bubble, but the last couple of sales didn't see any £50 ponies... last week there was one sec A colt that made a tenner, but it was a rather, ahem, lively yearling. Anything with any quality about it makes money, obviously not serious money, but not pennies either. I've been hunting for a project for a while and came home empty handed every time.

Hi

yeah, I suppose when it was looking like no grass will grow ever again, the prices were at rock bottom. The top prices for horses last week were somewhere in the region of £2.5-£3K, which although not astronomical, is much more than I am prepared to gamble at a sales. I nearly bought a giant donkey though :D those ears were to die for :)

OMG was there donkys there! How much did he go for?

Im lucky that we have our own stables with lush long grass. 12 acres split into smaller paddocks with 3 horses. :)

There are always donkeys, alpacas etc.
The giant one made just under £1K I think, but not quite sure as wasn't paying that much attention :) - I was mesmerised by the ears :D

Oh I didnt see any in June. I LOVE Donkys. So does my friend who wants a Giant donky....Ah I sure hope there is some there on 20th.....
If you are at the sale and see this crazy lady buying all the donkys.....It be us! LOL

I shall be there on the 20th, if you feel like popping over, I'm the person with a very shiney trailer - green, gold and white :D I'm pure class, I am, lol.

I'm confused...Are you asking if anyone has brought a horse to or from Melton? Or are you asking if anyone has bought a horse from Melton?

The first and only time I went to Melton sales was a nightmare from which I will never recover! That was in 1996 and horses were screaming for their mates, tied so shortly to the rails that when they tried to jump their rear ends were jolted to the floor. I thought one particular piebald gelding was going to damage himself beyond repair. I shouted at the top of my lungs "What are you people doing?" After my third outburst, a man came and loaded the gelding onto a lorry with several other horses. It was only then that I was told he was the meatman. It was a very rude awakening.

I think buying any horse or pony is a gamble alot of my freinds have brought some loverly horses and ponies from there all with some faults but what equine dosent, but they have experince so know how to deal with the few issues they had, Ie 1 pony had a bit of a buck in it and took the mick now realises she has someone that knows what there doing she is fabulous took her to her 1st show last week having her 2 months and she was in the top 3 on all her sj rounds, If i were going to give buying advice if you have the experiance buy something that is unbroken as then you know if hasnt been messed about with, My freind brought a stunning yearling filly red and white was about 15.2 at the time it was wild but a month later she was wearing rugs and is a totally differant horse and very sweet. Personally its the little sec a's and tb's that get me. I went few months ago and there were cobs foals going for £50 and i bid on a very showing sec a colt that went for £22. The ponys that are going very cheap are pretty much all colts as they cost to get castrated which is £100 +
Go with your eyes open and take someone with experiance and DONT let your heart rule your head if you see somthing very poor that needs care unless you can afford to take it look after it properly. Ive seen too many people buying the waifes with the right intentions Getting them home then realise they cant afford them. wish you luck xx

Hovis wasn't at the sales last week? :D

That is really mean!

Some quality horses do go through the auctions, I would look for horses whose owner is showing them or stood with them, they will be able to answer any questions. I also do know one of our local dealers sells his unsaleable horses through auctions. So, as everyone else says, take someone knowledgeable with you and also allow them to bid for you, so you don't go over what you want to pay.
Good luck, hope it works out for you.

They don't put horse meat in Pedigree! Don't panic. :)

Never bought at Melton but have bought at Henley (not sure if it's still going now) and it is heart wrenching. I had to sit on my hands and grit my teeth when the £12 yearlings were going through a few years back. The ones I got were lovely tbs, shouldn't have been there really! :(

Yes. I bought at Melton last Saturday! The first time I have been there but it must have been fate! I bought the ribby chestnut mare with foal at foot and in-foal. She is the mother of a young filly that I bought earlier this year and felt sorry for the mare so bid before my friend could grab my arm to stop me! Turned out she is very well bred although needs a lot of building up. Foal is a little cracker and full brother to the filly.
I was hoping to buy the Poitou x donkey but it proved to be my Poitou x donkey jack's sister! So I had to give that a miss.
I have now decided to sell my donkey so those who mentioned they'd like one, i've got one. He's got a much prettier face than the one at Melton. See my albums.

Honestly, Hovis' ears are nothing compared to that... it was nearly 15hh at 2 years old and the ears must have been over a foot long  It was a filly, too, shouting her head off in the ring - absolutely awesome! :D

Hahahaha I saw him also!!! Gave her much fuss and took a couple of ear photos on my phone as they were awesome lol. :)

A lot were going extremely cheap there. I loved the riding horse type dark bay mare that went for 350 :o

the big donk was fantastic & VERY VERY loud:D
prices were higher than they have been in the last couple of months - far fewer going for meat prices & quite a few going for a grand - everything i was interested in also attracted the dealers interest & went for 900 quid - too much money to risk loosing on a horse you cant even have a sit on.
There was a HUUGE chestnut hunter i really rather liked to look of - anyone know where he went?

Anyone going to Melton on the 20th, we maybe taking a 15.1 7yr old bay mare. Fantastic temperament just very green...as she has done very little in past 2yrs... ideal project for someone. Nothing wrong with her at all, she lives out 24/7,unshod no known vices. Has been driven also in the past. Unknown breeding but think shes prob cleveland bay x She belongs to another member Snoozinsusan whom also owns the poitou x donkey who is the brother to the filly that was there last week ! We have tried to advertise her for sale and loan but to no avail.. sales are last resort...if she doesnt go this week. I think there are some genuine horse there as people are struggling with the upkeep in this current climate... but it is always a risk. The mare and foal Susan brought last week was probably the poorest condition there. All the others looked relatively well...

Why would you buy 2 horses, 3 when the mare foals at a sale, and then put one of your own through the sales ring??? Unless I've misunderstood that seems a bit of a dodgy thing to do :(

Jay, the horse in my sig, was bought at Melton in April. He was sold just 3 days before at Malvern - poor boy.

His passport was full of info and I am in contact with his breeder. She has sent me tons of pics of him as a foal, his mother, his father etc. He has just been backed and my daughter is schooling him on a little, then he'll be turned away for the winter.

Have to say that I didn't actually buy him myself- a friend bought him with us in mind. He buys a few a year from Melton and then he either sells them on or they go to be hunt horses.

I don't think I would dare buy at the sales - I just don't feel experienced enough! And would prob bring home the poorest, sickliest ones!
