Hi. I was worried about my boys back teeth being brown and called the Vet to ask. I checked some of the other horses back teeth at the yard and cant say they were in good shape - one of them didnt even have any! Am I right to worry or is it normal that they tend to "rot" for a better word? He had the dentist out late last year and I was told that annual checks werent necessary unless pain was indicated? Thanks. (Maybe you could each have a gander at your horses back teeth tomorrow!!)

Hi

Difficult to say without seeing but the outside surface of the teeth can appear discoloured and is mainly staining. However, if the colour is kind of transleuscent blac/greyish then I would say the horse could have peripheral (surface) caries although I doubt this is the case.

I would have to disagree with not needing annual checks/rasps becuase the whole point of routine dentistry is to avoid pain. horses will put up with a hell of a lot of cheek/tongue damage from sharp points before they start displaying any visible syptoms.

Cor blimey I dont reckon his back teeth are much more brown than those? They are blunt though and look sssoooo old but I think I am reassured thanks
